Whew! 1.1 billion metric tons?

Volume is a tricky thing, guys. I think I'll do a little mini article on the asteroid generation system here shortly, and give you guys some ideas about the sorts of numbers I'm trying to deal with.

Cheers,
-Dirk

That's a big asteroid! I've yet to see one that dwarfs the Queen Mary Ann, but this one would certainly do just that if they were side by side. What are the odds of servers actually being able to handle asteroids this size in the 1.0 release? Or will they be smaller?

At least you won't run out of resources for a while :P

Assuming you kept at this thing with a crew of 40 AI clones 24/7, and that you only need to mine 1/4th of the blocks in the asteroid for perfect coverage, and that each block took a mere 5 seconds to mine, you could potentially strip mine this asteroid in about two weeks.

There are at least 1 million asteroids of this size in our solar system.

It would, however, lag the server pretty badly whenever you logged in - The smallest space this asteroid can be transferred in is about 120mb.

Isn't it randomly generated? So couldn't you technically just store the seed of it and transfer that? Though, that offers the issue of whether or not part of it has been mined.. (-just curious here 1-100 of technical knowledge I'm like .034)

Then send out the data of which blocks have been mined with the seed. Certainly that would be much less to send... unless they cored the asteroid...

That's a great idea! It definitely didn't occur to me.

If I never changed the asteroid generation algorithm, it would work great. But I actually intend to upgrade and improve upon it more or less constantly. Maybe in the far future I can switch to this method.

The 120mb asteroids will be quite rare, as far as asteroids go. Plus, if you find one, you're likely to stay still for a good long time :D
