I'll buy this game when it no longer requires Steam. It takes too long to pirate non-Steam copies (after legally purchasing the game) and, in my experience, they often don't run correctly. Please release a DRM-free version.
The combination Steam/Desura is the best for digital gamers ans Indie lovers!
Is the low rating for this game due to the fact that it isn't playable on Desura? This game is so much fun IMO. The soundtrack is amazing as well.
I bought it legit, but then pirated it so I didn't have to open that filthy piece of bloatware (steam).

Why does everybody hate steam?
It seems like its trendy to hate Steam. Aside from some very user specific issues that some people have none of it makes much sense. Ive heard a lot of hollow DRM complaints but they never really have more substance than -DRM is bad-.. I love Steam and Desura. Id never be able to keep track of my games library without them. (Also, my keyboard is broken, apostrophies dont work)
On the contrary, it's trendy to like Steam. That should be obvious from the enormous number of people who buy on Steam every day.
It's only trendy to hate Steam if you refuse to see any faults with it, or don't consider other circumstances that give people reason to not like Steam. I.E., if you have perception bias.
Desura lets you chose to update your games, while Steam makes you do it not only for games but mods as well. Desura also doesn't require the client to be running to run your games, while Steam does; during holiday sales, I've had Steam stop working on me and kill my game .exe when it did so.
Moreover, it's illegal for a distro client to interfere with your ability to play a game or use software you legally paid for. That's why these distros have 'Offline Modes', and why Gabe and Valve fans keeps claiming, with no physical or written proof, that Valve has a grand kill switch to remove Steamworks DRM if the service ever went under.
There's plenty of reasons to hate Steam, and the only reason they're hollow to some is PC gamers are far too willing to accept this kind of thing from game makers, instead of refusing to buy from them.

I hate Steam because I still have dialup internet here in the middle of nowhere and Steam is the most dialup and data unfriendly service I have ever come across. It is so bad that I can't even login to their website to buy a game if I wanted to. I have well over 100 games and haven't been able to play any of them in over 7 years. Even when I could use it, I had to turn it off to actually use the internet as it constantly downloaded stuff 24 hours a day even if everything was updated. I will forever hate Steam and even when I get a high speed connection I will avoid Steam unless there is no other choice.

You still have to have the client open to play your games though. That's the root problem there.
I'm not a Steam fanboy, but what you wrote is not entirely true. You can open any Steam game that doesn't have it's own DRM through Windows Explorer, like those bought in Humble Bundles. I just started Gemini Rue EXE in Steam folder to make sure and it worked.
That's the thing. There are too few games that allow that to make it a viable defense with Steam. Valve doesn't regulate DRM in the games they offer either, and as such, I've found Starforce/TAGES DRM in a few games they sell.
That's why I'm more of a Desura/GOG person, but when I see Steam keys being offered instead of DRM-free direct downloads from all these other services, which do offer DRM-free downloads, I have to call into question the dev team and why they're forcing this option.
