Indie of the Year Awards
2020 Winner

Welcome to the 2020 Indie of the Year results! After 10 days of top 100 voting, the results have been tallied and it's now time to announce this year's winners. Below, you will find the Top 10 Indie Games of 2020. Additionally, you can check out the Top 10 Mods of 2020, or register with IndieDB to add your indie game to the site and be eligible for participation and voting in the Indie of the Year awards for 2021.

Honorable Mentions

It's been an incredible year for indie gaming, and while the Top 10 winners are locked in, we want to take a moment to bring your attention and recognition to some games which just missed out. A honorable mention is given for polling strongly in the awards, but being ineligible due to placing higher in a previous year, or if a significant update was not released in 2020:

ScourgeBringer is a fast-paced free-moving roguelite platformer. Help Kyhra to explore the unknown and to slash her way through the ancient machines guarding the seal of her past, and maybe the redemption of humanity.

Something is wrong with the heart of magic. Play a young archivist venturing out into a dying world, cataloging its mysteries and its wonders to unearth the truth. Nanotale is the new adventure from the Typing Chronicles franchise and the spiritual successor to the acclaimed Epistory.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout flings hordes of contestants together online in a mad dash through round after round of escalating chaos until one victor remains!

Battle bizarre obstacles, shove through unruly competitors, and overcome the unbending laws of physics to avoid both humiliation and elimination. Leave your dignity at the door and prepare for hilarious failure in your quest for the crown!

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is the eagerly awaited sequel to the acclaimed medieval combat simulator and role-playing game Mount & Blade: Warband.

Set 200 years before, it expands both the detailed fighting system and the world of Calradia. Bombard mountain fastnesses with siege engines, establish secret criminal empires in the back alleys of cities, or charge into the thick of chaotic battles in your quest for power.

From: Foulball Hangover

Terrible. The top 3 games literally won because they barely have any reviews. Using this system any small game can just publish a few 10 reviews and violha, that appears to be exactly what happened. Have a hard time believing people voted for "She Will Punish Them" over Bannerlord and Among us.

I don't think reviews have anything to do with the voting. All I know is that Hypercharge was enticing people to vote on them way too much.

Indie DB is very much a place where developers congregate more so than players, so this listing makes sense. If it were player based, Among Us and Hades would dominate, followed by Bannerlord. If an indie game has mods, it will also tend to place higher if those tools are available at the same time they place. Additionally if an indie has a community that focuses on its DB audience, it also takes a top spot.

These results are user voted. HYPERCHARGE, Hydroneer and She Will Punish Them all did a great job of rallying their community. As pointed out by Thaiauxn, IndieDB is a unique place where you get out of it what you put into it. The awards are a way for us to showcase unique and interesting games, and give developers a new avenue for promotion and coverage. I kinda like that Among Us, Bannerlord and the obvious games don't just win by default.

Congratulations to each indie game that made the Top 10! For those who didn’t make it, keep on moving forward and don’t give up. You’ll get there in the end.

We cannot believe Hypercharge came 1st Place and also won Editors Choice award. Thank you so much to our community/those who voted.

Lastly, we’d like to give a huge thank you to the IndieDB staff for continuing to support such an amazing website.

Here’s to a better 2021. Take care and stay safe. :)

This list is surprising to me because I had never even heard of the top 3 games before. Strange how they won.

I and many many others have been following Hypercharge for a very long time, I still have fond memories of the Army Men series of games from 3DO. I was so happy to have found someone following in the spirit of those games.

Strange, I thought Project Wingman would at least be in the honorable mentions if not in the top 10.

Amazing! Great job everyone who made the top ten! I was very surprised when my game made the top 100. It would be nice to know how the other 90 games ranked, just out of curiosity.
