If you can't wait for the game to come, you should try the concept of its building part. You can do so by downloading the building demo of Planet Nomads, called the Editor (Available for WIN & MAC).
We've created a simple, straightforward tutorial explaining the basic building and how to navigate the Editor.

Is the start of the trailer really in-game footage? or just really dressed up scripted intro?

The cockpit is a mock up, the rest is in-game footage, in its alpha-stage. We have a lot of work ahead.
