It is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explore, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, conquer the land.

An update on the development progress of Planet Explorers.

Lots of progress are being made over the last half month at Pathea Games for Planet Explorers. We're not going to have any new video up until we have a very good running alpha build, so that's still a few weeks out, but we're getting really close.

We're still building our voxel technology forward, now we have normal maps, shadows, material blending, and even a simple form of LOD. We'll be pushing for full LOD for alpha stage, which means we'll have above 1km of view distance (take that all other voxel games!). Long view distance was something the art and design team pretty much demanded from the programmers from day 1, with long view distance, the player can feel the size of the world.

On the story front, the first 5 hours of gameplay are pretty much set (this is assuming the player actually follows the storyline). There are some twists and turns that should keep the whole thing unpredictable. The NPCs AIs are also getting there, now they can follow the player around, get out of holes, goto a locations, and maybe even fight. The UI's being completely redone, it looks a lot better now. We're going for simplicity and grace this time around, you'll probably get to see it soon in a screen shot. Enemies are also being upgraded on all fronts, there are some neat gameplay ideas that we're experimenting with...they should make the whole voxel-building-for-fighting concept super exiting! This part will be demonstrated in the alpha.

Speaking of the alpha, the game will have a closed alpha in late May. We'll post a sign up probably in mid-May. Stay tuned for that. Anyway, that's 'bout it for now, we'll show some new ingame screen shots on the next progress update, possibly some of the forest area. :)
