Overgrowth takes place in the savage world of Lugaru where rabbits, wolves and other animals are forced to use paws, claws and medieval weaponry to engage each other in battle. Combining 3rd person adventure platforming with intricate melee combat, Overgrowth achieves a unique feel. Overgrowth also benefits from Wolfire's brand new Phoenix Engine which has been built from the ground up to allow the use of cutting edge graphics, animation, and physics. Add to these exciting features Overgrowth’s realistic artificial intelligence and streamlined control system and the result is an astoundingly immersive experience.

Post news Report RSS Wind - HD Video

David have been working hard on the animation system, but he have also worked on sound effects lately, wind sound effects to be specific.

Posted by on

This video demonstrates the wind sound effects, there are two looping sounds in there; one constant background sound that increases in volume as you increase your altitude, and one swooshing sound that increases in volume and pitch as the camera speeds up. You might also notice a small camera shake at high speeds, there was a blur and FOV (field of view) effect earlier but they were removed for being distractive.

This feature ties in with David's basic game design philosophy; that everything in a game should be rewarding at a low level. It's more fun to play a game when there are small things like this giving your every move that extra juicyness.

Very Nice! love how the sounds change as you pick up speed and go up or down in altitude.

That terrain looks so awesome lol, bright green fields and such, looks nice :D

This will making falling off a ledge to my death a lot more entertaining.

And I love all the green. Nice change from plain gray. ;)

I'm a little bit confused, because wind seems to depend on height and movement speed. Yet, you'll probably not fly above the ground very often, so you won't notice this effect. - Or does it also get more windier, when you approach something high on a mountain (like the building).
I couldn't really tell a difference. It was either on full or on muffled volume, but it didn't seem to change dynamically, except when it's connected to player speed (gets louder).
I don't even know if that's right, but that's why I believe to have heard. I guess its okay, but that's really not a great feature to me. At least we get to see the map and scale, and that's incredible. Will the trees be as large as the one in the demo, or was it overscaled for some reason? Seems a lot larger than the statue in the vid.

There are two sounds, one swooshing sound that just gets louder pitch shifted as the camera increases it's speed, this might be a bit noticeable when just running normally but it will more noticeable when you jump around.

The other sound is a normal wind sound that increases in volume as you increase in altitude, so if you're on the top of a mountain or on a high building you'll hear the wind sound more than if you're in a pit.

It won't be free or open source, but you'll be able to easily mod the game.
