On the Hunt is an open world hunting game in development. It's a combination of FPS and stealth.
It has been several weeks since I published an update, but a lot of work has been done.
I can't use my old SVN hosting anymore, so now I have my own server with svn and wiki. There is not much there on wiki at the moment, but that will change in the future. What's more I created a trello board and make it public, so anybody can see what is the status of the game. There are still many tasks missing though.
Since there is already water in the game, deers are now able to go drink it. There are special areas near water and when a herd is in this area and a deer is thirsty it goes and drinks the water.
The old animation system was never meant to be the final solution, since it was completely written in Lua, without any visual editing capabilities, root motion or debugging. This was no longer enough so I implemented new animation system with all these features. Deers and player already use it.
Root motion was implemented too. It means that the movement of an animal is controlled by the animation and not by the script - no more sliding or instant rotations.
PBR is considered standard in new games and it really make things look better, especially firearms as you can see in the video.
Player's speed now depends on his state (crouch, aim, sprint, sneak, normal) and of course the faster the player is the more noise he makes and the easier is for animals to detect him.
Deers now make sounds when walking, however it's almost impossible to hear them unless the player get really close.
The third update about On the Hunt - featuring water shader, inventory preview, new gun and scope UI.
Second update about On the Hunt - featuring deer herds, a buffalo, gun with a scope and new gui.
Ambient life, deer's idle routine, terrain painting, bugfixes...
Making a hunting game seems weird to many people. Why have I decided to make one?
This release contains a few new features, including bleeding, hit zones, claiming, heart rate, sway. Features are not in their final form yet.
This is the very first executable publicly available, it's just a proof of concept, with almost no gameplay features or content. I'm happy to hear your...

Two news: On the Hunt passed Steam Greenlight and the prototype can now be downloaded from itch.io Mikulasflorek.itch.io
Congrats. Looking forward to the game.
Finally another hunting game!.I loved C Pro Hunts(even with the nasty 30hs bug)and nothing else atm to scratch that itch(I know about The hunter).I would like to be able to have the trophies I hunt in a cabin(some sort of survival mode).Couple that with some fishing and you got yourself the best hunting experience out there. But im happy to get another good hunting game.Tracking indefinitely^^
I exceptionally like the graphics.
It doesn't tend to look super-realistic, but it's not poor also. Overall graphics look very Skyrim-ish.
A question about world loading(I don't care very much about it's generation or creation), will it be small-sized that wil fully load into RAM, or big world that will be loaded by chunks/regions?
Graphics will get some upgrade with new scanned models, but nothing AAA.
Most likely all will be in memory. I want to have only single environment per map (e.g. one map can be forest, another one can be savanna), therfor one map does not have too many different assets and can be loaded in memory.
Looking forward to seeing updates. I really love hunting games and love that someone is planning on making one that is fully open for mods. I remeber playing hours of hunting unlimited and Cabela's hunt on the wii.
Looks sweet, i'll follow this game. Will there be blood tracking, or will all animals just drop when shot? Also, will there be variations in the antlers?
Thanks. Blood tracking will definitely be a very important part of the game. I'm also thinking about other ways to track an animal, however it's not as important as blood tracking.
Different antlers will definitely be in the game. I would like to have not only variations in the antlers, but also in the animals themselves - males, females, smaller, larger, different textures. However the whole animals are quite expensive to make, which limits the variations I will be able to get in the game.
I see, sounds awesome! I am very much looking forward to this.
