About two months ago, I had just finished an attempted Kickstarter for my game History of the Demon Girl. I was a little down about things and had worked at such a feverish pace during the campaign that when a backer asked me if I had any plans to participate in Ludum Dare 29, my gut instinct was to say, "No." After all, I had just been put through the ringer and while the Kickstarter had gone well, I was ultimately unsuccessful in reaching the 8k goal. The only thing that made sense was to take a break.

That's what I thought at first, but then something else kicked in.

I wanted to make another game. The idea actually excited me and when the theme of Beneath the Surface was announced, I got very excited. Though I had just worked myself ragged, I found a new energy and focus over the next three days and when I was done, NOPE was born.

NOPE is a comedy game - pure and simple. The goal was to create a game that would not only be funny, but also fun to play. I wanted to invite the player into the jokes and the comedy, by utilizing familiar game mechanics and playing with the player's expectations.

The game was received extremely well - better than I could have hoped for - and it took 7th place for Humor and 36th for Fun out of over 1000 entries in the Jam! In fact, it ranked above a 3.0/5.0 in every category except the theme! (If you want to check out the exact ratings and see some of the comments you can look at the Ludum Dare 29 page.)

And the rankings weren't all! I kept getting comments on the game from other devs saying that I needed to do more with NOPE - it needed to be a full game! A couple of people did Let's Plays, laughing and giggling along the way, and the game was even featured on IndieJuice and IndieGames.com for being such an interesting/original game concept.

It was an extremely exciting time for me and I've decided to push forward. If you still want to play the original version of NOPE, you can find it through the LD website, or you can play it on the SilhouetteGames website at:

Play.silhouettegames.com

But if you've already played it and enjoyed yourself, you'll be happy to hear that I'm working on creating a 2-hour expanded version of the game. It should contain about 240 scenes by the time I'm done, making the final product jam packed with ridiculous comedy. It will be released for Windows, Mac, and Linux (Ubuntu) and utilize the Game Maker: Studio development environment.

The first stop along the path is converting the original LD entry which was made in Flash to a Game Maker: Studio project and polishing some things that I didn't have time to do during the competitions time constraints. After that, I'll be off and running - looking for a release date sometime in early 2015!

So hold onto your pots. Things are about to get crazy!
