Influenced by titles such as 'Dear Esther' and 'Gone Home', 'Niten' is a story-driven exploration game experienced through first-person gameplay. Discover audio fragments which narrate the history of the island and its previous inhabitants; a Samurai master and his orphan-child student, and the fierce battles and mysterious events that took place there. An accompanying graphic novel illustrating the story becomes unlocked as you uncover the story fragments.

Built using Unreal Engine 4 and with assets created using Speedtree, 'Niten' presents a beautiful, lush landscape. The dynamic weather and diverse lighting makes each playthrough unique and mesmerizing.

Experience a place where ancient Japanese culture meets breathtaking scenery, blossoming cherry trees and a sky that will tell you a story in itself. Watch the weather turn and see the sun go down, feel the chill of the morning mist and let dandelion seeds sweep past you as you are free to discover and uncover the mystery of the island.

'Niten' is designed to provide an atmospheric and tranquil experience for you as a player and you will be free to roam the island in any way you desire as you search to discover its secrets.

Let fireflies guide you through the night as you walk up the hills of the island. Feel the sand and water on your toes as you wander along the beach. From the deepest bamboo forest, the open field with its colourful and vibrant flowers to the spine-chilling darkness of the mysterious cave and the serene lake filled with water lilies, the island is yours to explore as you wish.

We will be making a standalone VR version of Niten. The game will be rebuilt from the ground up to maximise it's efficiency and frame rates for VR and will be released as a standalone product. The VR version of Niten will be given free upon completion to everyone who backs the minimum £15 release of Niten on Kickstarter as a thank you for supporting us.

Take a break from exploring the island to discover your inner Zen-master as you cultivate your lodge and garden with a wide range of alternative decor, foliage, sand-gardens, water features, statues and unique collectible items.

With professional voice-acting and an original, studio-engineered score, 'Niten' will provide a fully immersive audio experience in addition to its polished visuals.

The stories of the Samurai master and his orphan-child student are told through audio. In collaboration with the Edinburgh Japanese Society, the script will be recorded in both English and Japanese, with subtitles available, and will be presented with the professionalism, skills and in-depth knowledge of native Japanese speakers.

At the end of each playthrough of the game you will be able to download the story fragments you have uncovered as pages of a fully illustrated graphic novel.

I can still remember the first time I saw 'Shogun Assassin'. I was 17 years old, sitting in my living room in Edinburgh, Scotland, and couldn't believe what I was watching. As a kid growing up in the 80s' I had developed somewhat of an obsession with old school Kung-Fu and Ninja movies but nothing had prepared me for this.

At this day I can still remember the moment I pressed play on my VCR and a whole new world opened in front of me. For me, this was it. One of the greatest movies ever made. From that day nothing has ever reached me on the same level. What really got me was the scenery, the story, the narrative and my love for that type of storytelling has carried over and become one with my other great love in life – video games.

I spent all of my years in Primary School going hungry as I spent all my lunch money on Robocop, Super hang-on and Arkanoid in the local arcade hall. My buses home from school were always "late". Ever since then video games have always played a large part of my life and my passion for them is just as strong now as it was back then.

I have always loved games that reach you on a deeper level and this is why recent titles such as 'The Stanley Parable', 'Dear Esther' and 'Gone home' have been a great inspiration for my current work.

I have gone into this project with my eyes open and with no misconceptions. I have always understood that this was going to be incredibly hard work and I have been working on Niten with every piece of free time I could muster since June 2015.

With 'Niten' I wanted to take the love and craftsmanship of the titles I have loved for years and use those influences to tell my own story. We all know the moment when you play a video game or watch a movie and you suddenly stop and think "wow, that looks incredible". That is the moment I am basing my game on and I want to combine that beautiful scenery with a fascinating narrative telling the story of the island and its very own Lone wolf and Cub.
