Shooting games are as much about movement within the environment as they are about shooting, and aerial/sea combat shooters are no exception. Since you have sci-fi as an excuse, I hope you go bonkers with map design in the name of interesting gameplay.
I definitely agree, maps and nice graphics must be there to improve gameplay experience, not to hide a poor gameplay behind a nice texture.
