After the huge work we did to release Guardians: The Last Day of the Citadel, there was a key point: we had to design a gameplay that will better suit a small team, keeping the graphics at high quality.
Here are the two main characters: Charlie, our hero, and the Evil Alien, who wakes up the puppets.
Charlie
Charlie represents the archetype of the anti-hero, one who is in the right place at the wrong time and must stop the forces of evil.
Evil Alien
The design of the Alien is obviously a tribute to 50′s Sci-Fi movies. The old classic representation of the alien that makes us smile, when today’s aliens are really scary.
Specifically, the eye is a tribute to the movie “It Came from Outer Space” of 1953, quoted in many other movies and video games like “Planet 51″ and “Metal Gear Solid 3.”

You're right, the skin tone of the 3D model is slightly pale, due to the default lightning when taking the screenshot for the modelsheet.
Moreover, the main trailer scene, with charlie, is really dark. That is the right color we wanted to be with ambient light.
