No IP problem ? It is like calling your game Diablo 2D...

I'm kind of more wondering how he'd get away with using sound effects ripped straight from Doom...

It's a non profit free game. you can copy and use anything you want if you provide it freely and sell it for money. like a fan made non profit movie. same applies to games.

Yep, that's right. Still I've seen Nintendo take out small fangames that were also free. Lets hope ID Games isn't like that. But in those cases the games were just remakes, this is more of an re-imagining of the game.

I think ID Software isn't like that. FreeDoom has existed WAY before this game and it's still up. That's why.

FreeDoom doesn't work in this case. FreeDoom replaces all assets from the original game. It even has its own IWAD. It is its own separate game.

Beware with Id Software. Some years ago, I was creating Unreal DooM, an TC for Unreal Tournament. We got a email from Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, with a "cease and decist" request.

Its a grey-area legally. I used to work on the MERP mod, a Skyrim Total Conversion Modification based around Tolkien's Middle Earth. We ended up receiving a C&D; we even got a non-profit lawyer and spoke with them on the matter. Literally using ANY "copyright words or images" they owned under the LOTR or The Hobbit game-making license they acquired meant the C&D would stay.

Along with the C&D, and reasons technically (Skyrim Creation Kit hard-coded limitations that we only discovered recently back then), we ceased development.

Really, it depends on the IP holders. Some are much cooler about it then others (Valve is a good example of this). Warner Bros ... completely different story. I can't speak for ID Software with this fan game: they might be ok with it, they might not. We'll have to wait and see.

Well it is a nonprofit fan game. By fans, for fans.
I’m not really gaining anything from it. It doesn’t even use ads.

I think the only thing they might consider is if it become popular enough to impact franchise IP : like getting referenced in google results before their store, etc...

The game is very good but feels quite restricted specially due to lack of diagonal shooting plus your own shots having limited range.

Extra sounds should be added for ammo/health pickups

Punching should be available xD

Tanks for the comment! I've written an article about the diagonals issue in the game's blog. Perhaps check it out. Calavera.studio

There will be a new version in the future with these changes. And chainsaw instead of fist!

I have read it and it seems the plasma gun does seem to do minor amount of job but its still not enough to keep you from getting frustrated about hitting that annoying imp on ledge that keeps throwing fireballs diagonally xD

Also incase are you going to add...you know...Glory Kills/Fatalities? x3

Yes, I agree that currently there is no early game way to easily deal with such situations. In the future grenades will take care of this, because diagonal shooting in my opinion would be too convenient.
Glory kills are a really cool mechanic, the only problem is that it requires an additional key and animations. We will see...

well it can easily be done once you acquire a berserk pack you go full melee and hit anyone and doom guy rips them apart(Limited time), like the star mario used to get and make everyone he touches bounce out, for the animation just make doom guy punch furiously or something and demons become chunks and doom guy gets health in return (Bigger baddies need to get hit more)

By the way why not make it Convenient? :3

Excellent game; everything was really spot on from the original. Great job! Any controller (xbox360) support in the works?

Nice pixel art graphics, a worthy fan tribute in my opinion, quite nostalgic. And yes, beware of copyright issues, I have seen so many awesome fan projects being refused by the ones which should get happy with that, when instead they could perhaps make money together with the fans who made the homage, or at least credit them. It depends on the current rights holder humbleness or lack of.
