MechCommander: Legacy is an upcoming free and open-source RTS game utilizing the Spring Engine. Taking place in the Battletech Universe, MechCommander: Legacy (MCL) is heavily inspired by FASA Interactive and Microsoft's MechCommander 2, as well as the Mechwarrior franchise, the Mechwarrior: Living Legends mod for Crysis, and to a lesser extent, PGI's Mechwarrior Online.
As in the MechCommander series, players take on the role of a Battlemech Commander, leading lances of Mechs against enemies in RTS fashion. Controlling one of 5 Successor States, or 5 invading Clans, players and groups of players can fight it out on a variety of planets in multiplayer matches or against AI opponents.
Welcome to the inauguration of the MechCommander Legacy MODDB page! We've decided to launch this in response to the quite unexpected attention our little video has gotten. We expected the video to reach a couple dozen people at most, mainly members of Spring's active dev and tester community. When we saw it hit a thousand views in less than two days, and get posted to three Battletech-related Subreddits, we were kind of unprepared.
But anwyay, here you can hopefully find out any information you need, be it on the state of development or aspects of the game. Feel free to drop comments and questions and we'll try to respond.
Now to address the state of development: MCL has been a hobby project of ours for somewhere between 1-2 years now. We've worked on it on and off, but it isn't until recently that a fully viable game has emerged from our directionless developmental gibberish. Currently the game is simply unviable for the general public; it is only playable in internal development form using methods that would be incredibly unfamiliar to the average user. We're using developmental builds of the engine, a 3rd party engine-affiliated multiplayer lobby, and near-improvisational start scripts. There is no executable you can simply double-click and start playing the game with, and no single compiled download to install the game.
So for those seeking to "try it out", I highly recommend you wait until we have a stable, viable and public-ready pre-alpha build. I have no ETA on when this will happen; there are a lot of gameplay mechanics and functions nowhere near readiness.
But, it shouldn't be too long. Within the next year, perhaps. But don't worry, we'll keep you up to date.
Hope to see you around!
