SITREP: I have built a loose model of what solar systems are going to be like, and pete is busy creating an elaborate game-world encyclopedia. I’m pretty excited about that actually. the prospect of having a whole bunch of lore — off of which I can code a game — this just spins my freaking robo-gears. admittedly in the past, (heh), I have coded things that were cool to me, and then back filled these projects with story or content, and boy oh pizza, that was just silly foot-play if you ask me. Yeah, this approach is exciting because I think we actually have a good idea of this silly space-world we want to build, and it already feels like it is driving change to the code and gameplay. its a bottom up approach! and its got a warm pie-like feeling to it! I mean the proof its- jusss look at these little encyclopedia entries!:

Jennifer-8: The "purple pillow," this planet has a gentle purple atmosphere. Warm year-round, and features intricate series of streams and rivers. A senior care facility planet. A community made for visiting, and sharing in the tender joys of old age. Pensioners come here. The two moons, "Theo and Nina", hold graves for those wealthy enough to be buried.

Jun and Pate: brother planets, mixed topography. A sanctuary planet for preserving galactic wildlife, especially the various types of space horses found across the galaxy.

yeah pete has created over 20 of these planets already, and is apparently still going. I think he is also going to create lists of people, landmarks, buildings, corporations, organizations and other such things. AREN’T YOU PETE?! jk, your in my heart. yeah, these are exciting nerd-times: to be creating a whole space-world of our own — dark goodness, i get flustered just thinking about this.

In all honestly, we are making very abstract decisions (at a scarily high-level) that feel almost entirely disconnected from the technical aspect of creating a videogame. But I do have some neat HD video to show. These are planets, moons (little sweet-pink balls), asteroids (brown), and a central star. so what is this? orbital dyanmics, procedural generation, and randomness. that’s right, all that was required to create this pretty twiddling solar system was a single pseudo-random number seed. if ur a nerd like me, well this just turns. u. on. (hehe jk! to be clear: this definitely doesn’t turn me on. why would it?).

btw: I am gonna be on twitch, playing old videogames, on friday nights…
