A brief introduction to the first enemies the player meets - the Rats. They're an introduction to core mechanics of the game. Although they are generally weak, they still have a few tricks up their sleeves!

Overview

The Rats are a group of enemies found in stages 1 to 5. They're the first enemies the player comes across and their role is to show some of the basic mechanics. They're generally designed to be weak with below average health and damage but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves!

The Units

Rat

Rat

The Rat is a basic melee fighter. It can attack twice. It has the following abilities:

  • Move: Travel to a nearby Tile.
  • Strike: Deal Physical damage to a nearby enemy.

Rat Mage

Rat Mage

The Rat Mage is a basic ranged fighter. It introduces the Burn status effect which deals damage to a unit at the end of their turn for 3 turns. It has the following abilities:

  • Move: Travel to a nearby Tile.
  • Fire: Deal Magical damage to an enemy. Chance to Burn the target.

Gloob

Gloob

The Gloob is a basic ranged unit. It deals damage to all nearby enemies when killed. It gently highlights the importance of being careful when moving units without being too devastating if the player doesn't keep away. It has the following abilities:

  • Move: Travel to a nearby Tile.
  • Spit Gloop: Deal Physical damage to an enemy.

Rat Caller

Rat Caller

The Rat Caller's role is to introduce the mechanic of summoning additional units. It has the following abilities:

  • Move: Travel to a nearby Tile.
  • Strike: Deal Physical damage to a nearby enemy.
  • Summon Rat: Summon a Rat or a Rat Mage randomly. Costs 1 Shard.

The Boss - The Rat King

Rat King

The Rat King brings mechanics from the previous enemies together and introduces the Energy mechanic that all future bosses will have. At the end of its turn, it gains +1 Energy and it has the following abilities:

  • Move: Travel to a nearby Tile.
  • Strike: Deal Physical damage to a nearby enemy.
  • Rat Rally: Summon 2 random Rats (Rat, Rat Mage or Rat Priest). Costs 2 Energy.

The Stage

The Rat tile set tries to be bright and welcoming to new players. As it's the first set the player will see, it shouldn't be too alien to them. This will be contrasted in the next group of enemies - the Undead - to give a sense of variety.
