A simple sprite and sound replacer for the Disperser shotgun/grenade launcher combo in Ion Fury. Features:
- Complete sprite replacement
- Included voxel models
- New firing sound
- Completely new animation
This is solely a visual and audio addon and can be played anything during your game, and removed safely, and also plays nicely with other weapon mods that won't replace the shotgun/GL.

Ion Shotgun for Ion Fury
I’ve been wanting to mod the shotgun/GL for a long time now, yet I wasn’t able to come up with a design I was happy with, plus there were a few technical hurdles (mostly due to my lack of coding skills). After producing 3 SMG replacements, I was now more confident and experienced enough to finally return to tackle the challenge of the shotgun/GL replacement. After many, many hours of prototyping, concepts and late nights, here we are yet again!
Like my other weapon mods for Ion Fury, this is dedicated to the amazing staff at Voidpoint and 3DRealms, as well as many of the decent folk at the 3DR Discord server.
Installation
Extract the contents of this package to your Ion Fury installation folder (eg, D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Ion Fury). No further action is needed.
That’s pretty much it, enjoy!
Update 14/09/20:
- Added a fury.def with automatic start up parameters to ease installation
- Applied Anti-Aliasing to remove the jaggies on the Ion Shotgun
- Removed some odd brown pixels (most noticeable in the cheek rest)
- The no ammo symbol now changes colour during the reload sequence
- Rounds in magazine has more shading
- Removed that weird yellow effect on the grenade/shotgun tips
- Shelly will now slightly lift the shotgun up during the reload so her hand is visible
- Greatly improved voxel textures plus utilised more gradients
- Better muzzle flash and removed the odd green glow
- Added in-game posters for the Ion Shotgun
Extra information in the Readme file. People still read them... right?
You do excellent work! Many Thanks.
Thank you
the game could use laser weapons, plasma weapons, rocket launchers, you know weapons that it should of had from day 1
YijArt! You're killing it with these weapon mods! ^^
The Sprite and Voxel work are genuinely fantastic.
Kudos for your "Uzi Weapon(s)" mod too by the way.
Thanks, hopefully we will see other weapon mods from other people too!
Also just to let everyone know I'm still working on this mod as there is still things that need to be ironed out, these will be:
- more anti-aliasing on some parts of the weapon (pretty jaggy and sharp at the moment)
- removing the blue on some parts of the barrel
- having the digital display change colour during the reload sequence
- more shadows on the ammo and less of that strange yellow effect
- better voxel appearance(I'm not a fan of voxel modelling, but it must be done)
A question: how to make it work if I use EDuke32 to play Ion Fury?
I've never done that before. Does EDuke32 have a startup command line system? like adding "-mh ionshotgun/ionshotgun.def" to the game launcher?
Failing that, open up "Fury.grp" with Winzip/Winrar, drag the "fury.def" to the base game folder, open that and type "include ionshotgun/ionshotgun.def", save and run the game.
So it should read as:
"cachesize 262144
include content.def
include ionshotgun/ionshotgun.def"
Let me know if that works, as I've never done your method before!
It worked! Somehow it did not occurred to me I could just make desktop shortcut and add -mh'es to the target line. Instead I messed around with autoload folder and such for little to no luck (best I have gotten was world models/voxels working but view model still being vanilla). Sorry about bothering you and thanks! Love your Ingram and this lovely shotgun!
It's good stuff to know, incase I go down that route in the future or need to give help on someone else who's using a similar method, so thanks for the feedback and enjoy the game!
PS. Check out SPYMaps (he has a section here too) and also TruckStopSanta (his stuff is on gamebanana) for awesome custom maps for Ion Fury!!
Having a blast so far! Shelly's awesome!
Eduke is made by same people who worked on IF so I just had to try it and see if I can run mods as well.
It detected needed files from my steam installation. Even your mods that were extracted there. Also tried 2nd method, where you move needed files (mods too) to same folder as extracted Eduke32 version (eduke32_win64_20200907-9257 is what I am using right now). In both cases only worked with desktop shortcut and added -mh'es in target line.
P.S. Will do!
I've done alot of digital retouching for the sprites, voxels and even added in a new poster. Details are as follows:
Finally a shotgun mod for Ion Fury ! I was not satisfied by the 3Drealms model especially because of the picatini rail and its mainly grenade launcher look.
On ennemies hand it looks good but in Shelly's hand it has nothing in common with a shotgun and it is frustrating.
I have only one request about this version : Having a more agressive pumping animation, like the one in Duke Nukem 3D. Even the vanilla version is meaner and I felt like in this mod it is lacking of the " mighty pump " that can help rythming decals.
Cheers! I did originally try to make a more aggressive pump animation, although unfortunately it wasn't turning out how I would have liked: my primary goal was to have the shells clearly rotating in the magazine, but with a more lively pump animation, this effect was hardly noticeable (also due to the 2D engine having no animation interpolation).
Thanks for your constructive feedback, it's always good to have those! If I'm feeling brave in the future I might come back and tackle this.
It looks great! Would you make a crowbar that replaces the electrifryer?
No crowbar, but was thinking about Eskrima sticks.
YijArt once again did an outstanding job! Congrats! Could you tweak shotgun magazine sprites by removing the rounded tips, so shells will look more like the ammo pickup? The reason why I ask is that it's not a slug round it's buckshot.
This is the type of feedback I like to hear that details on what I can do to improve the weapon, so thanks!
Indeed they currently are very stereotypical grenade rounds. I wanted to have a happy medium between HE rounds and Buckshot... I think I gave up in the end and got lazy with it.
I'm not sure if or when I will return to edit this (currently involved in a few projects now) although I'll definitely take this feedback onboard.
Oh, it's nice to hear that. Also, could you alter Shelly's spirite as well? She's holding vanilla shotgun still, but since I've noticed your attention to details (poster in e1m2 ;-D ) I thought you might want to change it as well.
