In this tutorial we learn how to create a custom heightmap using the program TerraGen. Using this program we can create heightmaps at 256x256 up to 2048x2048 so scalability is not an issue.
We will write a program provided by lt_rglloyd, a local to the board here on NA and make code he provides into Windows Form application to convert 8 or 16 bit bitmap (BMP) into a NeoAxis Heightmap.
In this three part tutorial you will learn the following:
- Save from terragen a usable bitmap that is a heightmap for NA.
- Learn to resize images to proper values from terragen.
- Learn to properly scale and size your heightmap in terragen so it does not look out of proportion to your player character.
- Rapidly create small tool to convert Bitmap into Heightmap.raw file.
