An accurate simulation of "The Hunger Games". You're a tribute, fighting intelligent AI in a "battle royal" to be the last person standing. Inspired by the novels by Suzanne Collins and the movies by Lionsgate Films. This is a turned based combat game in 1st person perspective, with Roguelike elements. The randomly generated arenas feature a central "Cornucopia" filled with melee and ranged weapons along with food and other gear, surrounded by wilderness in which one can hide or forage. You may form alliances with the other tributes, and backstab or be backstabbed by your allies. In the preview image (from a special "Audience" standpoint) you can see the semicircle of 24 tributes on their platforms, the central golden Cornucopia, gear in front of and within it, and surrounding landscape containing mountains and waterways. "May the odds be ever in your favor!" :)

Wow! Nice update! I absolutely love the way the sunset looks. I also noticed the new tribute counter.

My only complaint is that the tributes.. They do look a little too happy and silly for the hunger games! Is this an optional thing?

Also, the things I've noticed.. (That aren't noted in the description) (Curse you, that 5 minute-limit edit!)

1. A new looking weapon on the ground next to the #1 D2 Boy. (Have no idea what it is, yet!) Maybe this? Photoshopinc.com

2. Looks like the mutts have got new paw prints, although I'm not sure if they already had them to begin with.

3. New tribute counter (as I mentioned)

4. Could just be a part of the day/night cycle, but looks like the "fog" isn't so harsh.

5. Looks like there are now coordinates telling you where you are.

Wow, jesus? 10 things? I'm going to reply to this comment with more things and look at this thing closer, since this is going to take a hell of alot more then 5 minutes!

edit: a hint would be appreciated!

6. Not sure if this counts as one, since it is kind of "documented" in the description, but I guess you could say Tributes are now numbered. You don't have to look too hard to see that, so I'm going to count/not count this.

edit: The "10 additions" I guess means that also counts the 3 documented in the description? so I may have 1 left!

edit2: 7. I only see one footprint next to that "new weapon".. So I guess you can get rid of limbs now? Heh, kidding!

I'm sure there's something in the background that I'm missing, they're hard to make out..

7. FOUND IT! MORE MUTTS!

It says Mutt #4.. So, more mutts at a time!

I think, maybe that's it.. Maybe not. Oh well! I found 7 things. My search is done!

7 Undocumented ones + 3 Documented ones = 10! 10 Additions! Yay!

Congrats on finding all 10 new additions. :) To summarize:

1: Tribute and Mutt outlines (listed in pic description).

2: Feast and notification for it (listed in pic description).

3: Gradual day/night cycle as seen in sunset (listed in pic description).

4: New blowtorch weapon. (Haymitch and Maysilee used one in the book to reach the forcefield.)

5: "X" tributes left is now "X of Y" tributes left, since "Y" may vary now.

6: Coordinates displayed (along with direction as before), for Audience and District 6 (Transportation).

7: Better Mutt and tribute footprints, which finally point in the direction they went instead of always pointing north.

8: More Mutts ("Mutt #4" means no longer limited to 2).

9: Tributes are numbered at the bottom of their tokens. (That's indeed new: Previous screenshot introduced extra tributes, but it still had the old textures, meaning you couldn't tell District 1 Boy #1 from District 1 Boy #2 by looking at them.)

10: Mutt is labeled "Wolf Mutt" instead of just "Mutt" as before, which of course suggests other Mutt types. :) That could be lumped in with the new outlines feature, but at the same time gradually changing darkness fog could be lumped in with the sunset feature. Either one works! :)

Oooh. A blowtorch. How is that going to be used? How will it work? I don't have too much knowledge about those, but I'm guessing it could be used as a really-short ranged weapon? Could it be used for crafting? Oo.

I imagine it would do some kind of afterburn like affect, low-damage but would keep dealing damage after multiple turns.

What if it could possibly have the ability to start fires? The fires would be able to burn trees, being able to see more of the landscape, or cook food, or start a campfire.

The possibilities are endless, with this blowtorch..

Also, do you think instead of having the token be "cube shaped," it instead be the outline of the tribute? How do I explain it..? You could stuff all the "icons" ex. Tribute #, District, Gender, into the figure, and get rid of the cube shape. Although, it would mean that everything would have to be crammed in, and it may be a little harder to read.

Eh. Oh well.

This new tribute-look may make that corpse idea you suggested a bit easier to implement aswell, wouldn't it?

A blowtorch's flame is only a few inches, so it isn't a flamethrower. They're good for metalwork, so one thing you can do with it is dismantle the Cornucopia! (Attack tree with Axe creates Club, attack mountain with Pick creates Brick, and now attack Cornucopia with Blowtorch creates Spear.) They're also D13's favored weapon, since they maintain their underground bunker. There's indeed lots of possibilities that could be added, such as create lit torches from Clubs (Marvel had a torch in the book), and destroy extra objects by burning/melting them so others can't use them.

Thanks, the pale blue of day gradually changes into this sunset while things get darker in the distance, and then stars start coming out until the sky is black. :)

The tributes do look a little too happy especially since one just got bit by a Mutt! ;) However they will always appear rather cartoon like, given the nature of the grid/token based game. Now that the tributes are more human, lots more could be done, such as different hairstyles, add wounds on their legs/arms as they take damage, and look happy/sad/angry depending on how they're doing.

I think that they seem too happy for tributes, also , you should make the tributes, to not look like jelly, but make them in a way, so you can't see through them, would be nice, and, will you be able to name tributes ? would rock...

In the upcoming version, you will be able to name tributes. Also, if you make tributes nontransparent, when they are all together (in places like the bloodbath) you will hardly be able to see the loot/bounty, or anything at all, since they're really just tokens/cubes..

Hello, by now i know that in the next update there will be a feature of naming the tributes, but i wanted to ask, if there is any way to name them manually ? Like using the console of rewriting the script ?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote

Yes, there's a UI command (you won't need to use the console) which allows you to name tributes individually (e.g. say the current tribute should be called "Bob" and leave everybody else unchanged), as well as name them all at once (e.g. give everybody the names "Alice,Bob,Cindy,Dan" etc). There are also a few macros to automatically name all tributes from a preset name list (e.g. give everybody the names of the tributes from the 74th or 75th HG). :)

May I know what the command is ? I could not figure it out :D And, do you mean the current Daedalus 2.5 ?

Adding names required some programming, since we sometimes need to add "The" or "the" before a name. For example, consider the line: "X says: Hey Y, let's kill Z." In some cases the name "X" should have "The" before it, in no case should "Y" have anything before it, and in some cases "Z" should have "the" before it:

"The District 2 Girl says: Hey District 2 Boy, let's kill the District 12 Girl."
"District 2 Girl #1 says: Hey District 2 Boy #2, let's kill District 12 Girl #3."
"Clove says: Hey Cato, let's kill Katniss."

I did not think about that.. well, we can clearly see who is the programmer here, and honestly, i cannot wait until the next update ! You are an amazing programmer :)

Sunset looks really good! Does this mean there is going to be a day/night system where AI is affected too?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote
Cruiser1 Author
Cruiser1

Yes, the sunset is a timeslice from a new day/night cycle. As it gets darker, AI won't be able to see as far, and so won't run and pick up objects or aggro on targets in the distance. And the whole thing is a new arena option, meaning you can play with the new day/night cycle, play in all daylight as current, play in eternal night for a challenge, or have it randomly chosen meaning you don't know what to expect. :)

how will the mutts spawn if more than two, will there be a group in the corner or what.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote
Cruiser1 Author

Mutts always start out in the corners of the arena. If the tributes are in a semicircle, then the Mutts are in two groups in the two farthest corners. If the tributes are in a full circle, the Mutts are in four groups in all four corners. Running away from the Cornucopia is a fine strategy, but there are dangers in the wilderness too. :)

you can teleport stuff by pressing "enter" and then a lowercase "i" but only yourself

Yes, you can use the Daedalus command line console to manipulate game state in this manner. This should of course be considered "cheating" or not part of the official game! Pressing "Enter" then typing "i" toggles from perspective to top down view. In this mode you can click on the map to change your location. (Although until you move once to a neighboring square, part of the game will still think you're at the previous location, e.g. tributes can still attack you as if you were there.) Afterward do "Enter" and "i" again to return to perspective view. I actually do this a lot when testing the program. :)

you can see them move in that mode just press f4 and they move

I think you mean F3 or "." hotkey (pause and let everybody take their turn), instead of F4 or "d" (drop inventory item). Indeed, from the top-down view you can step through an entire game. Press Shift+F4 or "N" and the game will autoplay until the end.

In the 3.0 Deadalus can you add in allies. Example: You are the boy from 5 and you want to have an alliance with the girl from 10 but go up to get and give her a ton of stuff to form the alliance. What I am trying to say is that can you program in you having an alliance with another tribute that isn't your District Partner?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote
crazedgunman502

You already can do this in the current version, by giving them stuff, things like tridents are considered better gifts and will help a tribute like you more.

In version 3.0 there's a setting which allows defining which Districts are allied with each other from the start of game. Districts can also be defined as "aggressive" (always run to Cornucopia), "cowardly" (always run away from Cornucopia), or "normal" (choose randomly at standard percentage). There are no hardcoded Career Districts anymore, but rather the default is just that 1,2&4 are allied and aggressive.

I know that is how you alliance with another tribute, but is there a command so you don't have to go up to them and attempt to alliance with them? Because every time I try to alliance they end up killing me when I shower them with gifts.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote

Unless you're allied from the start (see above comment), you need to do something to convince them to be your ally within the game. It's usually best to form an alliance with one good gift, instead of a bunch of little gifts. Good items are 5 damage weapons like Sword, Trident, and Bow, or the best consumables (First-Aid or Bread). If a tribute considers you "enemy" (i.e. one of you has attacked the other), it's hard if not impossible to get allied with them, since you need to make them neutral first (without them attacking you) and then go from neutral to ally.

Description

Version 3.0 has tribute and Mutt tokens that are more recognizable as people and monsters. Notice the "feast" notice at sunset designed to draw the remaining tributes back together to fight.
