Heist Night Game Guide

Heist Night is a two player asymmetrical game where one player plays as the thief and has to try and steal a treasure, and escape. They do this from a first person perspective. The other player controls two guards and has to try to stop this from happening. They do this from a top down perspective.

We recommend all players to play while having some form of voice chat enabled as player interaction is a big part of what makes this game so fun.

This tutorial will look at both player roles separately and explain what goals both peruse.

Guard

As the guard player your main objective is to catch the thief player. This is done by getting one of your ‘guards’ close enough to the thief. To do this guards have a multitude of tools to their disposal.

Controlling the camera

The guard player can manipulate their camera in multiple ways. They can pan in any direction by using the W, A, S, and D keys (hold shift to go faster), by moving their mouse to the edge of the screen or by double tapping/clicking a guard which focuses on that particular guard.

Controlling the guards

The guard player can control their guards by selecting them with the left mouse button or pressing the button on their keyboard that corresponds with that particular guard (1 or 2). By double clicking or tapping the button the camera will focus on the guard that is being selected for quick navigation.

When a guard is selected the ring has a 100% opacity. As shown in the picture guard 2 is selected and being moved as indicated by the white path.

To move a guard the player has to click their right mouse button where they want their guard to go and the guard will find the best possible route to that point. Guards can also patrol by using Shift when pressing the right mouse button. When paroling the guards will continue walking between all their points. A patrol can be as long as you wish. As shown in the image guard 1 is patrolling. This indicated by the green path.

Guard view

The guard icons are animated depending on their state: white when standing still, green when moving and red when spotting the thief player.

Finding the thief

Generally the guard player cannot see where exactly the thief is located, unless if one of their guards has a direct line of sight with the thief. However the guard can see in what general area/zone the thief is located. This is done by saturating only the zone the thief is currently in and giving that zone a ‘tag’ which spells the name of that particular area.

When the thief is in direct line of sight of one of the guards the thief’s player model will become visible, the music will change, the guard icon becomes animated in red, and the guard will automatically start following the thief player. The thief is about as fast as a guard and can try to hide so generally you need to try and encircle the thief in order to catch them.

Thief

As the thief player your main objective is to locate your treasure, steal it, and escape through the destined exit.

Controlling the thief

The thief works very much like a standard first person game. W, A, S and D to move, rotate the camera with the mouse, sprint with shift, and steal with the left mouse button. Sprinting uses Stamina which regenerates over time. The amount of Stamina you have left is displayed in the bottom middle of the screen on the Stamina Bar.

Finding the objectives

Your target treasure is displayed at locations that are encircled in the screenshot. On the top right there is a rotating model of the object you are attempting to steal and in the middle the name of the object is displayed. After stealing the objective this position will display what color door to escape from.

The objectives

There are 3 different treasures, and 4 exits in the museum. Their position is static so learning where to find them may be key to success. The museum also gives hints as to where a treasure may be located. Each area is themed, for example the Catacombs is Egyptian themed so it is very likely that if there is a treasure there it is something Egyptian. Each area has signs that identify what they are which may help you on your quest of finding these treasures.

All treasures have some form of light making them easier to spot. This counts for both players. When you are near enough to your target you can press left mouse button to steal it. Be careful though as the guard will instantly be informed.

Once you have stolen the treasure your next objective will be to escape through the destined exit (displayed above the stamina bar). This can be the yellow, blue, green or red exit. As a rule of thumb, the exit is never in the same area as the treasure you stole was in.

Avoiding the guards

While you are trying to find your objective the other player is trying to find you. And this player is always close. The best way to keep the guards in check is by looking where their spot lights go as this is the only place where they can see you. This also goes for when they do spot you. Namely, when guards are following you your shadow can be a great tool to try and get away, as it informs you of the whereabouts of the guard that is chasing you. Without having to look back.

Your shadow

When you are spotted the music changes and a chase starts. As the thief you are about as fast as the guards, however the other player is actively trying to outsmart you. Generally when you are spotted the best tactic is to cut corners and try to hide once out of sight. You can run away from one of them but while that is happening the other guard may be looming.
