I'm Zeduras working on Hallucination, A new horror game. So, I want to share this article with you for how avoid the jump scares in the horror games.
We all know if something suddenly appeared it will scare you. We can call this method by "Cheap fear". But how to make scary game without these jumps.
There is a lot of things to do !
The story: if your game depends on the story, you can make it freaky with something can't imagine. Like your brother suddenly become an enemy or a ghost.
The atmosphere: Try to create a wonderful environment by lighting, sounds, music, gameplay, characters and places.
Survival : Make the player always nervous, make progress to life, food and fear. Put the player always under the pressure.
Breaks : make breaks to the player to go out from the fear, because if he freaked out he will not back to play.
The horrible models : the scary characters are horrible models don't forget that !
That's all, it's easy but depends on your creativity.
