Here's something I finished recently - when the game starts, you'll have an orientation meeting with the department chair (which is probably the only time you'll interact with them.) They'll explain the basics of the game, and if you try to probe for detail, they'll tell you that you should be able to figure things out yourself.
Like everything in this game, this is a highly cynical caricature of what happens in real life. You start grad school with a vague idea of what it is and what you're expected to accomplish, but many students are left to figure everything out themselves. A major part of GradQuest is trying to learn the mechanics as you go, because no one's there to help you. Hopefully, players will come up with hypotheses for how things work and test them.
