Gears of Eden Development update! What's going on this week and what we are struggling with as an Indie.

GoE Concept 0006

If you follow us on social media, you’ve probably noticed that we’re working every day to build a community. That’s important, because as an indie development team, we don’t exactly have the marketing budget that you might see from a title with AAA publishing. Oh what we’d give to be able to craft a masterful digital short film like Blizzard is so known for. What we can do every so often is a small giveaway! Now, I say small, but internally we’re very excited about this, because we were only able to do this thanks to the support and encouragement you all have been sending our way.

So what’re the details of this giveaway? Well, we’re giving away a $50 Steam Gift Card and Three (3) Alpha Keys for Gears of Eden! All you need to do be in the running for it is to follow us on Twitter, ReTweet one of our tweets about the contest, and reply with “#LoveGoE” (no quotation marks). We are so, so happy to put on this little event as a thank you for helping us reach 2,000 followers on Twitter! That’s insane! We really appreciate your interactions and support — so please get in touch with us, be involved in the conversation and creation of GoE, and let us know what you want to see and how we can do better!

Still! This is the development update, so it’s time for me to talk about what we’re working on this week! We’re still working on fine tuning our latest testing build and finding inevitable glitches in the matrix, but the important thing is that we’re actually finding and documenting them, rather than letting them hang around. Our programmers then are continuing to work diligently, and have sneaked their way into Sprint 3 without my noticing! Seriously: they’re wizards. This sprint is devoted to constructing the mining mechanics in a way that’s actually fun, rather than the “drive and click” placeholder mechanics that we currently have. I’m really excited for this phase because it’ll finally push us into the phase of “an actual game,” however small and unfinished.

Far less impressively, our writing team (which I am very proud to call myself a member of) has completed our Play-Story document. This is something you’ll probably never see, but it gives us a framework from which to design and structure scenarios and the pacing of game content.

That’s it for this week’s Dev Update. Thank you all so much for your continued support, and we look forward to having even more progress to tell you about next week! As always, follow us on Twitter and Facebook for all of the latest updates on Gears of Eden. Also, if you’re feeling particularly generous, take a peek on over at our Donations page to see about supporting the project! Thank you all and have a wonderful day!
