Polycounters, are a small group of game design students from Pulse College in Dublin. We are Alan Flannery, Rahim Traynor, Mark Petson, Mark Witty, Juriën Meerlo and myself, Kieron Kelly.
For One Night Only was the result of a fairly strict game design brief. (First Person, Not an FPS, Based in the 1930-50’s, 3d) And after some back and forth with the group, an initial idea of both a horror and circus based game from Mark Petson was decided on. It’s fair to say that the game in its short development time has gone through some changes, mostly in concept stage, but the core mechanics have remained.
Besides having the Ringmaster chase you, the fundamental mechanic of using the candle as a timer has made it from concept to realisation, and whatever we change in the future I think its safe to say the candle will likely stay.
The build we submitted to college was released on indiedb on June 4th. Which in its early state is really a pre-alpha demo and an example of what we could do with the game and the concept.
We have a lot of plans for where to go with the game, and after a meeting with the team on Saturday we hope to have some of those nailed down with a clear set of goals in mind. We already have a list of things to potentially look at, specifically about consistency across the game. From sound quality and volume settings to scaling and map design. There’s lot’s we can do to polish and tweak.
We have lots of plans to improve on this idea and it has a lot of potential. Thank you for taking the time to see how far we have gotten so far and please keep checking back to Indiedb and facebook to see how we are progressing.
Also, we’d love you to comment and rate the game in its current form, let us know what you think and where you think we could progress from here.
If I understood it correctly, the candle gets shorter as time goes by?
Hi Eliza,
Yes, the candle will gradually get smaller as it burns. Once it runs out and the light fades away, you will lose the game automatically. (Thematically you get lost and eventually found by the Ringmaster)
Things will get clearer as we introduce more elements to help players understand what's going on in the environment around them.
Thank you for trying the game!
Kieron
