Engines of War brings you nonstop Real Time Tactics action from the first second of the game: You are the pilot of one of the massive combat vehicles known as "Engines". Lead it (and lesser units) into battle together with your team - and destroy your enemies and their base! Engines is inspired by DotA's gameplay, but freely redistributable and modifiable content on the Spring Engine.

Release Message
Yeah, it was long ago that Spring 0.82 was released. 1 year, 2 months & 23 days to be precise or just 449 days. Much water ran down the rivers. Tunisia, Egypt & Libya freed themselves from their despots. Nuclear power mocked official estimates of risk probability again. Duke Nukem Forever was released. Pigs learned to fly.

And now: 84.0 finally gets released!

Again, thanks everyone for your contributions!
This time, special thanks go to SpliFF for his ASSIMP implementation and daftalx for his MacOSX ambitions & supplying us a buildbot client for it.

Download links:

It's also the first release with a (experimental) MacOSX build.
For the time being you can either use an experimental SpringLobby build here or weblobby.

Major changes:

  • ASSIMP support (not 100% finished yet)
  • EFX/EAX support (sound reverb)
  • AI Interface pure-ification
  • Many speedups (and twice as many slowdowns)

I've been looking into doing a free/open dota-inspired game lately. Was planning to try and write some code to overcome some shortcomings of the MegaGlest engine. Looks like some Spring fans have beat me to the punch! This looks genuinely like the game I have been dreaming of creating for last few years.

Can't wait to see the playable alpha. I'd love to have a go at contributing once its available.

Cool to hear, we'd be happy to make an addition to our team :). As stated elsewhere (I think?), we hope to put up a public alpha version soonish. We're at a bit of a crossroads regarding how close to the DotA concept we want to stick, and how much to vary towards Mech-steering (more of a Bloodline-Champions style controls), so if you have preferences regarding that, you might want to consider checking out the closed release :P.

P.S. We've discussed (or at least I've thought about) alternate Game-Engines from time to time, using Spring is certainly (at least in part) partly due to circumstance. Probably we'll stay with that for now, but if there's sufficient reason (and impetus) to do so, we can certainly still switch.

Ah.... Still waiting on SOMETHING playable....

I'm well aware of the devlopment issues at hand (I do read), but I still wish someone would finish what's left just so we can PLAY it!
Not me though. I don't do coding.

Any release yet? BTW would it be possible to take your mod and make it into a 1st/3rd person combined arms 3d open world game if i put the work into doing it and give you all the credit? this mod you have here is perfect for a combined arms mecha game.

combined arms as in different units like tanks, planes, boats and infantry working together to reach one goal. but i don't think this game will have infantry.

Game development is now "On Hold" until Sean or another dedicated lua coder steps up to play. I have the game resources, but I am not interested in completing this project alone. If any one is interested send me an email or PM.

There is a small possibility that Sean will return, but I have not heard any word from him for quite awhile. He told me he lost interest in finishing the game in its original plan, but he did mention interest in working on releasing a playable version; however no further communication followed.
