Platformer Elfscape: Ancestors is telling the story of a temple Guardian. She is asleep, waiting for the prophecy to come true - when the Chosen One shall descend underground, he'll fight a victorious battle against a Demon. One day, the Guardian is awakened, and she quickly realises the Chosen one is nowhere in sight. She needs to find him, and quickly - her life energy depends on it. Elfscape: Ancestors brings 24 levels, distributed into 6 environments, through which you'll be accompanied by an epic story told through visual-novel-like elements. Level recycling & building

Dev Diary 14

Hey everyone!

As some of you may know, the first game we started working on wasn’t Elfscape: Ancestors, but the original Elfscape game. The original Elfscape went through many changes before we decided to postpone it and create a smaller Elfscape: Ancestors as a prequel. Because of the many changes, we ended up with a lot of already thought out material which we had no use for.

Today’s diary is about how we “recycled” one of the older level designs, mostly keeping the level logic, but also changing a few things. The most noticeable is, of course, changed level graphics. However the most important changes are adjusting the level obstacles to a different jump distance and trajectory, or adjusting the animations to a changed speed of the main character.

Level building falls under Andrej’s competencies. You’ll see the level recyclation in the first video - it’s on fast forward, but the whole building took about an hour. And that was just a rough build before testing. The second video shows you a playthrough of the built level.

(Disclaimer: The music used in videos is not from Elfscape: Ancestors, but from a free source.)
