Let me begin this description by saying that we have very high ambitions with this game :)

The idea
Elarahem, a fantasy world where war and destruction is common and where humans walk the earth among Elves and foul beasts'

Yes, you have all heard it before - menace, thousands of years of war and odd creatures ruling lands you never heard of' Over and over again has the MMORPG industry tried to take new steps in the enormous genre'
Where other online RPGs tries to flash you with their stunning graphics and tactical battles, Elarahem will take a step backwards' We want to return to the roots of role-playing, to the pen and the empty sheet of paper on a table in your garage' And what mastodon-sized client will you have to download in order to play it? None'

What we want to do with Elarahem is simply a game world that is accessible to anyone' Therefore, the world of Elarahem takes place inside your favourite Internet browser in an ASP-environment' You won't have to download huge plugins or similar scripts, everything is being taken care of on the server and then sent out to the players in pure HTML'
Our idea with Elarahem is to offer to our players at least the best parts of what today’s standard MMORPGs offer' This includes;

  • Character Management
  • PvE Battles
  • Quests
  • Buying/selling items
  • A world-map on wich you can travel around
  • Hopefully also PvP Battles
  • ''' and a lot more

The fact that the games takes place in HTML makes it incredibly easy to play it - just start your computer, double-click your browser, login and play' It also makes the game content very dynamic - we can whenever we want update the world and instantly see the changes in real-time'

Gameplay
So, let's face it; HTML is static and will always be' Sure you can do some Java-scripting to extending HTML a bit, but in the end we cannot really compete with enormous seamless 3d-environments that you can run around in for hours' At the same time, Elarahem will not require you to switch between 4 CDs to install it' But, realising this fact, we are aiming at forming the layout and gameplay in streamline shape to make the player spend maybe just 10-15 minutes on his character a day' If we could achieve this and still maintain the interesting and fun aspects of the game, we would have interested and entertained players that wants to play the game, which must be the goal of every game developer'
Keeping the general play-time low, along with server-optimised programming and a clean layout will lower the bandwidth and hardware usage of the server, making the game more accessible and also faster to play'

What makes Elarahem different?
So, what does make Elarahem different? Well, except the fact that it takes place in HTML (which by the way has already been done) not much' Nobody wants to play a boring game, so we try to look in other RPGs for fun elements to add into the game' Vampire: Bloodlines and World of Warcraft is two games that we've been heavily inspired from, for example' These are the basics;

Since the beginning of time, Elarahem has been tormented by wars, leading to the formation of three major unions; The Empire, the Rebel Settlements and the Elven Society' The Empire - led by humans - would like to see the entire world united in The Empire, to create order in the world' The Rebel Settlements on the other hand consists of different creatures (such as trolls, ogres and demons) that loves nothing else but chaos' The Elves has simply withdrawn themselves to their islands, sick and tired of the other two unions constant fighting'
As you can see, this is a rather classic background story for a fantasy-game - but as in all RPGs, it is you that create your own experience of the game, not the other way around'

Progress?

News

I guess there are a couple of people that would like to know what progress has been since the last update. That's why I decided to take a few minutes and put this news-post together.

The game is not progressing as fast as I want it too, at all. This is mostly becuase I - in the role as main coder - started in a new school just a few weeks ago, in a completely new location and everything (I'm going to educate myself into a real coder, by the way ^^). This has been a tough time with long days working, long distances to travel and new habits to get into. I've been busy during the weekends with various family-related events and such...
So I guess I'm making up excuses why I haven't been working on the game.

Plain and simple I've been too busy to find the time. No one is more sorry about this than I... I really want to finish the game as soon as possible. And I will finish it, just a little later than I planned.

I haven't been totally useless though, I began working on the travelling-system some time ago and I guess I'm about half-done with that now. So the PvEs are not too far away ;D

I hope you still can find the interest to keep fallowing my little creation, in spite of my laziness.

Thanks everyone! If only you knew how much a little encouragement helps ^^

NBSpiuneer: that 20% is only estimated, though I might say I'm pretty proud since I do this only on my spare-time, something that I unfortunately don't have lots of =)
Also, I kind of 'cheated' and head-started on the game a week or so before I decided to add it to modDB, simply becuase I wanted to show you guys something from the game instead of a blank placeholder. This kind of games can also be made considerably faster than any other standalone since they don't need tons of 3d-models, textures etc. Mostly it's coding everything from scratch that takes up the most of the time.

Dr.Zoidberg: it's actually going to be more of a text-like game. With graphics. =) If you've played one of these games before, you'll know right away what I'm talking about -if not then it's kind of hard to explain.

Anyway, you do everything in your webbrowser - travel, change stats, battling etc. It's dynamic HTML, ASP. You could say that it's like a webcommunity, but a game and more advanced. Also, my lacking knowledge in the english language doesn't make it easier to explain =)

Thank you ^^ Though, the fact that the game has to stay within the boundries of HTML makes it a pretty different job than a regular mod :) Currently I'm working as much as I can (when not studying) and awaiting new concept drawings from the artists.
