The alpha download link is now public. You can find it by registering at our forums and looking at the downloads section! You need to register on the forums so you can report bugs and see the shoutbox updates!

Note: The client crashes still occasionally rarely happen. I'm working with the SFML developers to find a fix. If your client crashes, please add "debug.txt" to your "rsc" folder and, in the event of a crash, screenshot what the console outputs (not the debug file). Thanks!

Looks interesting but I don't want to register at your forums to get the download. IndieDB has a section for downloads already.

Seconded, I understand you guys want to encourage people into the community but you will get many more people voluntarily joining the forums to share experiences if you make the download readily available on mod/indieDB as hemebond said.

My thoughts as well.

I keep all my downloads in one place on my forums. Since I update so much, it would be a nightmare to fill out multiple download forms every time I make an update (which can happen multiple times each day). It also allows me to track bugs easier. It's in a VERY early alpha stage at the moment, so this is a requirement.

Oh, and btw, I could care less about the amount of people playing. I just want to keep my fans happy.

I'd still recommend having a download link here. You don't have to update it 50 times a day if you are putting out that many updates. Make a note saying to go to your forums for the latest updates and update the download links here on indiedb once at the end of your day with the latest version.

I would do that if I had an auto-updater. I've been meaning to add one for a while. Once I do, and once I'm in Beta, I'll consider it.

It's really not about entitlement or anything like that (if you thought the people requesting a download link here felt entitled), just convenience. If you want people to play test your game, give feedback, etc... it would just be to your benefit to make actually getting your game more convenient and accessible.

Also, I'm not sure if I will have to create a forum account to play the game, but to download it it didn't make me register for the forums. Don't know if you changed this but perhaps update the bottom of your post to reflect that. It might turn people off if they have to register, I didn't.

Look forward to trying it out soon.

Yeah, it was more of a suggestion than a demand.

Thanks :)

I would consider offering the indiedb-downloads a service that *does* keep fans happy (at least the likes of hemebond). Nevertheless, I will take the long and arduous journey to the boards. :o)

* You have _one thread_ in your Downloads forum, and the post contains a link to Colonies-game.com where I found all the files. I just downloaded without registering on your forums. Suggesting people had to register to download was false.

* There was no point in having your own forums when you already have an IndieDB profile and your files are located externally.

* The download only contained Windows files; is this game actually made for GNU/Linux?

"I could care less about the amount of people playing. I just want to keep my fans happy"

First of all, the saying is "I couldn't care less". Second of all, the more players you have, the more fans you will likely get.

1) Yes, I know. It was a suggestion

2) "There was no point in having your own forums" - I market to other people outside IndieDB. I won't evolve my life around one promotion tool.

3) As I said on the forums, it's only a Windows download at the moment (unless you run on Wine). It says that on the forums.

4) I refuse to revolve around IndieDB. 3/4 of my community comes from elsewhere. Believe it or not, I don't just use one promotional website.

5) It's in early alpha and I can't bugtrack if people don't register on the forums. Later, I'll start actually caring, but since it's ALPHA, I don't care.

I am keeping in mind that you weren't the one that over-reacted to my innocuous comment with silly accusations of entitlement, and so am just giving feedback based on what I see. While you might not care just yet, handling things this way now might impact the community around your game later on.

Also keep in mind that your original post stated that registering on your forums was a pre-requisite to downloading the file.

I'll download the Alpha and sign up for the forums because it will take less then a minute. I know you have to be "politically correct" since you don't want to lose future sales, but I can say it. It is amazing how some people feel they are so entitled. If you don't want to sign up for the forum; don't download the alpha. For the amount of hours he and his group have poured into the game and you balk at the request to join their forums for you to play a FREE alpha?

lol i think thats whats being said we wont download there is no demand, no body is saying that it is there right to have it on modDB/indiDB they are only making there opinion known that that they would rather get the download on on those sites instead and have decided not to download the alpha. so i don't know what your getting on about we aren't hating the dev but giving some feed back.

You don't seem to understand what "politically correct" and "entitled" mean.

I didn't want to sign up to download the alpha, so I didn't. Should I not have notified the developer why they lost a potential tester?

Yes, I do "balk" at their request (it isn't a request if it's a requirement). All it's trying to do is direct people to the developers exclusive community rather than being a part of the IndieDB community.

Does IndieDB not have features the developer needs? Looking at the Colonies-game.com I doubt that is the case.

You write, "You don't seem to understand what 'politically correct' and 'entitled' mean", a terrible way to begin a discussion. I don't understand the words I use? However, in the land of the great internetz their are numerous people who believe aggressiveness is the best way to respond. I will leave this discussion because this discussion is not helpful to this indie developer. Plus, how can I compete with someone with such superior intelligence compared to my own? Good day, Hemebond.

"a terrible way to begin a discussion"

I was merely addressing issues in your comment in the order they occurred.

It is not "politically correct" to not swear at, or abuse (which is, I'm assuming, the politically incorrect response you had in mind), someone who informed you they didn't want to sign up to your exclusive community website to download a file.

You misused "entitled" because it is not entitled to not want to sign up for yet another internet forum as a pre-requisite to downloading a file.

In fact it is entitled to think people _should_ sign up for your exclusive community rather than "force" you to work with the community website they (and the you) are already a member of.

This became especially obvious when I found out that registration wasn't required to view the forums, and wasn't required to download the files.

FYI, there is no aggressiveness on my part, just a calm rebuttal to your false accusations.

I don't want thousands of testers yet. I want a controlled group, so I wanted people to register at the forums first. I made it a public link because it's too hard to manage otherwise. Once I actually start accepting pre-orders, then I'll care.

I agree with the above. You'd think people would be greatful they are being offered the chance to play the game for free. Even in early alpha it's pretty enjoyable. Keep up the good work.

If you had replied to the comment you are agreeing with we'd have a better idea what "I agree with the above" meant.

Apparently I'm not as desperate as you are to play games so I am unlikely to be "greatful" for having to jump through hoops to download a file.

The sorting of messages posted obviously doesn't work as I thought it did. Although you clearly got the idea of what I was agreeing with.
I've not stated I'm desperate to play games, but I appreciate the effort the developer is going to, to create and release a game which at the moment is free.
You've stated yourself that you navigated to the forums and downloaded the game, so having to make several clicks of a mouse, and taking all of about 10 seconds to do so is hardly jumping through hoops. In fact it's actually much less effort than posting all your argumentative tosh on here which you seem to have no issues doing.

I only went to the forums after the initial replies. That's how I found out you didn't need to sign up to the forums to download the file; invalidating what the developer said in the news article.

It actually isn't more effort to post a comment here than to go through the developers forums to download a file. You see, I already have an IndieDB account, and the whole site is built to allow indie game developers to host information, files and discussions about their games.

Setting up your own forums/website just fragments the community, information and resources for a game.

I can understand your prospective - free stuff is good, AMIRITE!? Unfortunately, people have a limited number of entertainment hours, and it's a developers job to prove to the consumer that their product is worth spending that time on. The attitude that "Customers should be super grateful that I'm even giving them a chance to play my awesome game" is not terrifically useful, nor does it reflect the realities of sales.

I also agree with Hemebond; stating that you need to sign up for your forums in order to get access to the beta, when the beta is clearly accessible from a single, publicly available external website, seems disingenuous. The developer can host his files wherever he wants, and if he doesn't want to host them on indie-db because it's a pain in the *** to update multiple places (which I totally understand) that's his prerogative.

The community members pointing out how this creates a barrier to entry were making a good point though - being able to gracefully and politely accept feedback like this (and then do whatever you want with it) is an essential skill for a businessperson. Being unable to accept feedback, even if it is couched in aggressive terms, will just get in the way.
