Dwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy game. You can control a dwarven outpost or an adventurer in a randomly generated, persistent world.
The world is randomly generated with distinct civilizations spanning over 1000 years of detailed history, dozens of towns, hundreds of caves and regions with various wildlife. Command your dwarves as they search for wealth in the mountain. Play an adventurer and explore, quest for glory or seek vengeance. Extended ASCII character set rendered in 16 colors (including black) as well as 8 background colors (including black).
Although Dwarf Fortress is still in a work in progress, many features have already been implemented.

Excellent game!! Don't get fool by the graphics, the game is very resource demanding. My 2,6 ghz c2d is suffocating when playing up to 200 dwarfs...
Actually, it's only processor heavy. It doesn't use anythign else really, well, RAM probably helps too, but the video card doesn't matter in the slightest.

Was not expecting to see this on here. Totally caught off guard that Toady put Dwarf Fortress on Desura, but not complaining. I really hope this helps give him even more exposure. He deserves it. Wonderful Game!

Alpha funding implies there's an end product in the near future. Toady plans to continue Dwarf Fortress development for the rest of his life.
finally, hope desura gives support for tools available to it, also.
I've finally mustered up the courage to approach DF over the past few weeks.
Seriously one of the best, most enjoyable games I have ever played! I will donate once I get my next paycheck :)
