The year is 1865, the american civil war has been fought for four years. Rumors of monsters are spread across America, people started scavenging and hiding from their society in fear of the monsters. The monsters are spreading through epidemics. Your old friends have left you to protect themselfs and their families, you're on your own, your goal is to survive. You wake up, you have nothing, you have to scavenge supplies and survive the unforgiving world. Darkest Night is a first person horror survival game, coming to PC/Mac/Linux. Either play with or against other players in multiplayer, or play by yourself in singleplayer, both modes are available. Darkest Night is designed with a low poly art style, it looks great, and it has good performance for the player. Stay tuned for updates regarding the game!

Finally v1.2 update is here ! New items, new animations, new buildings and weapons(WIP), and awesome inventory modifications.

THE PROGRESS

This week, I've been focusing on inventory and animations. It's been tough transitioning into Blender, but I think it's going uphill right now.

THE INVENTORY

The inventory has got a major improvement from last time I posted here on IndieDB.It's actually functional now, and it looks great. However I will replace the cloth icons on the left side of the inventory system(They're placeholders).What's new about the inventory system ?

  • An info window popping up each time you hover over an item, giving you the name, durability, and an image of the selected item.
  • Scroll and drag functionality in the inventory, which makes the inventory easier to navigate.
  • Item options that's working with all current items, for example "EQUIP", "INSPECT", and "DROP".
  • Inventory slots, the inventory is dynamic and takes in mind whatever backpack/clothes you're wearing.
  • Clothes and weapon slots, where you can easily assign items to.
  • Durability item tint, the item background will light up/tint depending on what the item's durability is.

ANIMATIONS

Been modelling low-poly arms in Blender and animating them to fit weapons and items.Since you can pick-up pretty much any item, I had to re-use a lot of animations, but it does look good.I've been focusing this week on weapon animation and how it'll be programmed into the game.

NEW WEAPONS

I've modelled and implemented a fully functional LeMat Revolver into the game, with sound and shoot animation.The LeMat Revolver is just a starting point of what kind of weapons that will come into the game in the future.I've also read about the american civil war and in details what kind of weapons they used and general information about the war.There's tons of weapons(WIP) that's waiting to be modelled and animated completely, so there's definitely enough weapons coming into the alpha version.

I've made 3 simple buildings with interior yet, but more is on the way.I'll provide screenshots of 1 building, this one is a wooden shed, which should later be craftable by the player.

ITEM UPGRADES/FIXES

If you guys haven't seen the burning lantern GIF I provided a couple of weeks back, then here's a new one !I changed made some changes regarding the color and flicker effect, and it looks a whole lot better now.

CRAFTING SYSTEM(WIP)

Made some ideas for the upcoming crafting system.The crafting system will revolve around what the player finds in the world, but it will be a crafting system anyone can understand, a simple one in other words.Crafting will include building, such as building a small wooden shed, but that's not nearly done.Things like bandages, improvised bullets, clothes, backpacks, campfires will be craftable and usable.
