You wake up in a dark alley, not knowing anything. What has happened anyway? You struggle after the truth and answers. Answers you want to know in the darkness and fear, which makes your heartbeat race like violent blows against your head. Where do "they" come from? What has happened? Are you just turning insane? The time is up; you can't stay there reading your smses forever. It's time to head out and find the answers. Cry of Fear is a singleplayer modification of Half-Life 1 which brings you the horror you've always been afraid of. It's a total conversion of Half-Life 1, which means it uses NO Half-Life 1 content or other peoples' files. It's all made exclusively by the developers. It also uses new gaming styles that you will rarely find in Half-Life mods, such as advanced cutscenes and other stuff that will be revealed at a later date.

I saw minuit posting on another mod, and I was going to come here and yell at you guys, lol. But this made me happy... Nice lantern? Got rid of the cell-phone, or did it die prior to entering the forest?
We're having multiple light sources in this mod, not only the cell-phone.

thats what I was gonna ask. Looks nice, but I'm hoping for a bit larger range of light. Hopefully there's other light sources in the forest :)

****! I am obsessing over this mod these days... It's hard to convey to you, the developers of this game, how much anticipation is building up. This relatively uneventful in-game picture you guys submitted has at least partially succeeded in satiating my irrational hunger for content from this mod. In short: looking forward to it.

Great. Wonderful. The only improvement I'd make, from what I see so far (Not much (*whispers* PERFECT *whispers* ) ) is make the trees a model. If you do, or don't I still love it.
The trees are both brushes and models. As HL1 has some great limitations, I can't use only models.
Did you consider using something like Sysop's fading env_model? No performance loss and great detail can be added in the level, you could use only models to make the trees and they'd look much better. The code was posted inside the SOHL forums some years ago but still works fine

I've tried that effect, and it doesn't look good. That's because the sprites aren't getting lit by your flashlight, only by map light entities. And since the forest is totally dark, the grass will be totally dark too. The best solution to it was to make the grass into models.
That's a good point actually, the flashlight doesn't illuminate the grass.. good job the areas I'm using it in are daylight lit!

I wonder if we'll get a lamp + one-handed kind of combo in case it's to dark to see/shoot shtuff. I remember being generally annoyed with mods that add lights and stuff, just not the function to wield a weapon while doing so, as they generally just make it impossible to pass certain dark areas, where you'd need freakin' cat eyes to go on without a light.
We've thought about that, like for the cell-phone, you can attach it to your bag so it still lits while you're using weapons. And for the lantern, you can just drop it to the ground so it lits. You can pick up any lantern from the forest too. But the more lanterns you pick up, the darker it gets in the woods. ;)
you should make the enemies attack the light sources aswell, imagine walking thru and a light up ahead goes out and your on your last batteries thatd be so cool, the only advanced lighting my mods gonna have is ones that turn on and off when a player enters/exits a room (no way near as cool as yours) Kepp up theamazing job with a 13 yr old engine (QUAKE 2 ENGINE was released in 1997) You cant even call this a Half Life mod, this should be released as standalone as the Quake Source is free wheras half lifes isnt.

I think problem with model based prop is the lighting: the origin controls the lighting of the model, and if the origin get pointed with a flashlight, then the whole model gets illuminated (a giant *** tree getting bright when ou just point a flashlight to the base)
I dont know if this will be the case in CoF so dont shoot me.

You guys can see a demo of the dark forest in action in the Merry Christmas video at around 1:30, it looks freakin' scary! It looks like you could get lost really easily.

I still can't beleive how awesome GoldSRC is!! This is as good as Source engine in graphics! This mod is definitively in my top 3 mods for HL1 (the other 2 are Sven-Coop and Natural Selection).

Have you played Afraid of Monsters yet? It also had a really dark forest. Though you didn't have a lantern to light the way.
I played Afraid of Monsters before and I was probably creeped out at that part but this looks different.
