A.D. 633: Rise of Islam Releases v3.0

roi2 1

A.D. 633: Rise of Islam has been updated to version 3.0, to be compatible with the latest version of Crusader Kings II (v3.x.x, Holy Fury). In addition, several new features are included:

Bloodlines

Several new bloodlines have been added:

  • Blood of Syagrius. Syagrius was a Gallo-Roman ruler in the late province of Gallia Lugdunensis, now northern France. At first nominally a vassal of the Western Roman Empire, he later claimed independent authority as King of the Romans. He was defeated and overthrown by Clovis in A.D. 486, but his descendants live on.
  • Gupta Blood. The Guptas founded their kingdom on the Ganges river, and the Gupta Empire at its height controlled half the subcontinent. Known for it's decadence and wealth, the empire eventually fell prey to incursions by the White Huns. The Later Guptas claim descent from the Guptas.
  • Arsacid Blood. The Arsacids were the ruling house of the Parthian Empire, which was the predecessor of the Sassanid Empire. A cadet branch of their family ruled Armenia for centuries more, until it was eventually destroyed by the Persians and Romans. The last Arsacid Armenian prince took refuge in the Roman Empire, and his direct descendants hold some lands as vassals of New Rome.
  • Blood of Cunimund. Cunimund was the last known historical ruler of the Gepid kingdom. He was betrayed by King Alboin of the Lombards and his kingdom subjugated. Alboin forced Cunimund's daughter Rosamund to drink from his skull, but she got her revenge by having her lover assassinate him.
  • And others, such as the Seven Iranian houses

Donatist Heresy

In the fourth and fifth centuries, North Africa became a hotbed of religious controversy due to the teachings of Donatus Magnus. He was fed up with the peccadilloes of the priesthood, and convinced his followers that sinful priests could not offer valid sacraments or perform other holy duties. Anyone who renounced the Donatist faith under persecution was anathema. One offshoot of the Donatists, the Agonistics (called by their detractors the Circumcellions), even became so obsessed with martyrdom that they would beat up travelers with clubs to provoke them into "martyring" them.

The Donatists are represented in-game by several counties and rulers in North Africa (although historically they disappear from the records in the 6th century). They have lower opinions of excommunicated and wicked characters, and are unable to falsely confess faith. Their holy order, the Agonistics, is active at game start.

New Succession Laws

Witenagemot is a succession law available only to Anglo-Saxon characters. It is an elective type where only dynasty members, close relatives, and claimants are eligible. Close relatives and all realm rulers, besides mayors and republics, are eligible to vote. Vote strengths are increased by rank, and the ruler always gets several additional votes. The AI is likely to vote for the would-be primogeniture heir, as long he is an adult. Most starting Anglo-Saxon realms use the Witenagemot law.

Another new succession law is Caliphal Elective succession, which is only available to Muslim Caliphs. Dynasty members and learned vassals are eligible for election. Each elector, chosen for their status or education, receives one vote. It is the starting law of the Rashidun Caliphate.
