The fourth entry in the BIT.TRIP series, Runner, well I was quite shocked to find that it was a game about running. Running, jumping, kicking, sliding, blocking, and springing to be presice. The game is very addictive, with a rather nice rythm-based feature to it. Every time you do something right, it adds to the background song. Every time you do something wrong, you have to start over. Simple, hmm? Well, the game is actually VERY hard. We're talking about levels such as Odyssey, The Gauntlet, Slobbering Falls, all of them are part's of Runner's steep difficulty learning curve. Also, after a while, you begin to get somewhat bored of it, just hearing about 20 seconds of song then PAWMMM!!! Try again. And checkpints don't appear in this game either, which is a rather unfortunate deal. So, well, if I'm honest with you, I'd rather play Black Mesa than this way-too-hard game about running. (I'm still trying to let the fact that this game is about running sink in) So yes, the addictive gameplay scores this a BI9SCORE of 8, but the only reason it didn't score a BI9PERFECT was the difficulty. Now, when am I gonna be able to review Fate? Hmm... :/

It's a monotonous game, but difficult
Song is cool

This game is evil (though addictive at first).
Don't let the soothing fun music trick you in to getting the game.
When you play the harder levels you begin to realize that you can't simply time your button pressing entirely to the music (which is what you'd expect) rather you almost always have to hit the button just BEFORE the beats, the "reward" sound plays correctly though. The end result is you end up relying more on visual cues rather than auditory.
I finally beat the later levels on hard difficulty by taking my headphones off.... thats how far it pushed me/forced me.

Bit Trip Runner is an incredibly simple, yet incredibly addictive game. The developers have taken five actions, mapped to five buttons, and created a challenging and rather complex (for the genre) on-the-rails platformer (though it is truly in a category of its own).

I find myself coming back to this game frequently and in the long run will probably have played it more than most other games, indie or mainstream. Sometimes I find myself wanting to play it just to listen to the soundtrack, and to experience that feeling of sharing in the creation of the music which this game grants.

The only reasons I hesitate to give this title a 10/10 are the ultimately simple and repetitive characteristic of the game, and the sometimes sadistic level of difficulty. While I am obviously more than happy to play and enjoy games with simple designs, they do get repetitive after awhile and require more breaks. Also, it is hard to grant them quite as many points as something with more depth (assuming the deeper game brings it all together well). As for the difficulty, while I am happy for a challenge, and even embrace the level of difficulty necessary to complete the individual levels, the challenge of 100%-ing the levels and then doing like-wise with the bonus stages is immensely daunting. Having the ability to retry the bonus levels without retrying (and 100%-ing) the main levels first would have reduced the difficulty enough for me to rethink giving this a 10.

I like the way it blends music and gameplay. A great game.

Pretty cray. Trippy yo.

I remember Lion King on snes/genesis back in the day, it had a couple mini-levels where you had to press down and jump at the right time while the image was scrolling automatically, same for moon patrol in the arcades ages ago.
Least moon patrol had a lot more complexity and fun, and a lot more freedom of control, you could slow down or rush ahead, you could shoot ahead or upwards, or jump, etc.
