In this short 2.5D arcade/action game, control a giant mutant lizard to eat people, crush cars, and throw things. Spend points on upgrades and new abilities and try to survive an increasingly deadly hail of bullets.

Thanks, everyone, for helping to get this game Greenlit!

Test the mobile alpha demo here: Play.google.com

Features

  • Three Game modes:
    • Story Mode - Play as the lizard and rampage your way through three main levels and two bosses with a few cutscenes along the way. Unlock two other monsters for arcade mode.
    • Arcade Mode - Choose from three monsters and try to survive as long as you can. No bosses. No cutscenes.
    • Practice Mode - Relax and practice your moves without getting shot at. Get a feel for the controls and throw stuff at targets.
  • Fully Animated Characters:
Each monster has over two dozen animations, plus an IK system to move the character's neck and head (so the monster can look at the annoying jerk who keep shooting it).
  • Upgrades:
Spend the points that you get from eating people to improve stats like health and armor, and unlock the ability to pick up cars and stomp on things.

Update 2018-11-25

News

A lot has changed since the last update. But writing is hard, so I'll make this brief.

The biggest change since the last article is the two new monsters:

creature2 optimizedcreature3 optimized

These work differently than the original lizard. Instead of having a tail that can grasp things, these creatures both have their own way of picking up and throwing objects.

This guy, somewhat inspired by frogs or whatever, can use its tongue to catch people and pick up cars (That's what frogs do, right?).

resized 2018 11 24 14 34 34

It can then hold an object in its mouth and launch it at enemies. By holding down the mouse button, you can keep an object in your mouth and crosshairs and a power meter will appear so you can aim and launch.

resized 2018 11 24 20 34 31

The next one is a bit trickier to work with, but at least it can fly...

resized 2018 11 24 14 54 57

Without a stretchy tongue or a prehensile tail, this thing can only pick up whatever it can reach with its little bird legs. Hold the mouse button down, and this thing will use one of its talons to try to grab whatever the mouse cursor is on, as long as it's within reach.

resized 2018 11 24 15 17 32

Release the mouse button, and the monster will toss the object in the direction of the cursor. The strength of the throw is determined by the distance between the cursor and the monster. It's not perfect though. It's kind of tough to throw anything upwards. I may need to make some adjustments to it in the future.

Also, I made a trailer, which is already outdated due to slight changes I made to the UI. But it's got music and everything.

I really enjoyed this. I felt powerful, but not invincible.

The 2 glitches I noticed:

1) sometimes jumping and pressing F to stomp would not allow me to do anything other than move until I jumped and stomped again.

2) a tank got stuck behind a building but was able to shoot at me if it could see me

Would love to see a mode where you have keep a tiny character alive for a time limit or something.

Thanks for commenting.
I think I can fix that tank problem easily by checking for obstacles between it and the player. The jumping/stomping bug is something I noticed as well, but still haven't figured out why it happens.

I'm not sure I understand what your game mode idea is. Are you suggesting something where you have to defend something like an AI controlled baby monster?

cool!

and I just meant, One of the little people running around would have health and you have to guard them.

I don't know how that would fit in the game, but I've been thinking about it for a little while and it could possibly be an interesting little bonus round or something like that.

I have got to say this is a pretty fun game, like it's still early stages but I can see it has a lot of potential! (I played Windows build 3)

A few things that I'm going to comment on:
1. I didn't seem to be able to pick up cars, I'm guessing that's going to be a feature because it would be the main source of ammunition.

2. A lot of the police officers would run to the other side of the road where I couldn't do anything to them, not even the stomp was working, unless I hadn't unlocked what to do there maybe try to make it so everything the player does affects both sides of the road.

3. I'm guessing this is coming in but a lot of special effects to ad feedback would probably be a major selling point on a game like this, like maybe leaving temporary footprints and blood splatters where you kill people.

All in all though this is looking really promising! I can't wait to see how it progresses!

Thanks for the feedback!
You can pick up cars after you use the strength upgrade in the upgrades menu. At first you can only pick up smaller cars and cop cars. The second level upgrade lets you grab trucks and larger cars as well.
There's also some blood splatter already, but only in some cases (crushed or dropped). That stuff could certainly use some improvement, and I do like the footstep idea, maybe just for stomping or landing though, to add emphasis or whatever.

I'll need to think about what to do about those clever cops staying out of reach. Shouldn't be too hard to fix.

I'm happy to hear you're enjoying it so far.

Okay I must have not been good enough to get to those upgrades, but I'll keep it in mind for when I play in the future.

Oh I also meant to say, a little trick I heard a while back, is people really like it if after you adjust the volume through the in game settings if it plays a little sound so you can figure out how much you've changed it. Just a little creature comfort thing if you feel like incorporating it.

It is a good game to pick up casually and I'm sure it will only get better as you continue!

The volume thing is a good idea.
I made a note for myself to remember to do that. Right under my note to remind myself to make it so the tanks don't roll over when they hit people, even though that looks hilarious.

Thanks again!
