Welcome to week 2 of the Aftermath Developers Diary!
This week, work continued on network play, we scrapped the original network system and quickly rewrote it using a new, more efficient system over last weekend, now we have player position, direction, and bullet position and directions all being synced. We hope to sync the AI soon. The first play test over the internet also occurred this week, which I'm pleased to say was a success, it worked as well as all our LAN tests so far.
Keeping on the vein of network play, we are working on a basic communication system, which will let players communicate using pre-set voice clips to co-ordinate with other players.
You can offer suggestions for some orders you would like to give over a network, using the comments section below.
The weapon system has also received some work adding the base code for reloading and firing all weapons in the game. Weapon sprites still need to be created. Work is still required on picking up weapons and swapping between primary and secondary weapons.
Work has also started on the creation of a survival map which is coming along well. This is a fairly small survival map centred around a small building. The screenshot below shows the map mid-development.
The interior still needs some more work and creation of the map will expand outside of the building in the coming days. Hopefully the map will be finished within a few days so expect a screenshot mid-week.
So heres of a list of things we've done on the game this week:
- Rewrote the Network system, Players and bullets now synced in Survival mode.
- Base code laid down for a Deathmatch Network game.
- Added some pre-set audio clips to communicate over a network, not yet sent over a network.
- Fixed some bugs with the menus.
- Fixed a couple of bugs in Survival network mode.
- General bug fixes.
- Started creation of a survival map
Next week we plan on doing the following:
- Finish weapon system
- Get AI synced in Survival Mode.
- Finish first survival map
- Hopefully create a fully working test version for an online survival mode map
- Get the command voice-clips to send over a network.
- Progress further with the Deathmatch Network Mode.
- Get some music into the game.
- Hopefully get a short video trailer of some gameplay.
Stay tuned for more updates next weekend.
