Modders, it's time to get serious and create some seriously awesome content. Mod DB have teamed up with the great folks at Croteam & Devolver Digital to bring you the #SERIOUSMOD competition to flex your creative muscles. Artists, you can also enter, there are over 20 prizes up for grabs so there is a great chance of winning.

Your Task

We want you to create either a mod for Serious Sam Bogus Detour or art inspired by the game. What you choose to make is entirely upto you, just remember if you are creating a mod the first place to start would be the excellent Hammerwatch mod tool.

Prizes

We have some seriously awesome prizes to give away to our top 3 entries, and fear not - if you don't make the cut we are also giving away Serious Sam Game Packs (Steam) to the next 20 best entries. Here's a breakdown of the main prizes:

First place

  • $2,000 cash (USD)
  • Mod officially bundled with the game

Second place

  • Nvidia GTX 1080 GPU
  • Serious Sam Game Pack (Steam)

Third place

  • Logitech G904 Mouse
  • Logitech Orion Keyboard
  • Serious Sam Game Pack (Steam)

The next 20 best entries

Put some effort in, and if the judges think your art or mod is great, then you are likely to walk away with a Serious Sam Game Pack (Steam) thanks to Devolver Digital. It's going to be seriously hard to miss out!

Share on twitter to win

You don't even have to submit an entry for the chance to win 1 of 5 Serious Sam game packs from Devolver Digital. All you have to do is tell us which is your favorite entry with the #SERIOUSMOD for the chance to walk away with a bunch of seriously cool steam keys.

This is totally unrelated to the contest but I just wanted to say, those animated stars with lines popping up when you move a mouse near the prize pyramid are very cool.

I agree, but my simple mind is way too easily distracted. Send help.

haha, its called particles.js very easy to implement. Is rather pretty though :D don't forget to submit a mod or art though, with only a month deadline and 20 prizes total, we suspect most people who enter will win!

It is a simple way to make the pyramid section stand out a bit more :) Glad you like it! Always look forward to designing these custom competition pages and already have some good ideas for the next one. Hope you get involved and enter the competition!

I assume art entries will be judged on innovation, complexity and creativity? (Since there is no "fun factor" or "replayability" involved with them. :P)

You'd be correct there :)

Yes, art entries will be judged slightly differently, as the Serious Sam brand is quite a fun one we hope to see some creativity.

I have checked a video of how to use the editor of this awesome game and it looks
like a great editor. But it will take quit some time to make good levels with it,
so i am interested to see how many people will actually take the time to work with it.

As a leveldesigner (modder) myself i am intrigued to work with it, hopefully i will be
able to get it all done in the next 24 days.

All in all, great stuff Hipshot, Crotem/Devolver and Moddb!!!

Forgot to mention that you need to replace the "SPYmaps" part
in the .xml text with your own name, or something else.

I already did comment on the youtube channel but it is probably better to also
comment here.
The text for the .xml file is;
<info>
<name>SPYmaps</name>
<tag>This is the best campaign</tag>
<description>This is a testmap, just to see if i can get this 'thing' working</description>

<players min="1" max="4" />

<start>
<level name="cool level" lvl="levels/level_1.lvl"/>
</start>
</info>

Seem we can only work at one level at the time though, with the title
(which is in this case "level_1")

I know you are working on tuts for the editor, took me a hour but now i am already
quit familiar with the way this editor works, and it is a beauty!

Hey, thanks for holding this contest, but there's something I can't really make out of the rules.

Say I submit a mod here. Said mod is based off an existing IP, but every resource in the mod is custom-made and nothing is borrowed from others without their permission.

-Under these conditions, can the map not be included in the game, should it win first prize?
- And if it does, will I still recieve the cash prize, or will it automatically be disqualified from winning first place and only win second maximum?
- And if I made it less obvious that it's based off an existing IP, will there be able a possibility to win first place regardless?

Thanks for answering in advance, I'm definently taking part in this but just wanted to see what course of action I need to take.

You are allowed to submit this mod and are eligible to win all prizes, as generally fan made content is permitted by most IP holders. But in the unlikely event the IP holder submits a DMCA claim it will be disqualified. Also while I cannot speak for the devs - it probably cannot be included in the game, but as I said about, the rest is most likely ok.

I have to say that i start to get really frustrated here!
For days now i try to get familiar with the editor, and i can make a world, place
enemies, playerstart, weapons etc. But, that is it.

For days i am trying to get things triggered, but without having any luck.
I watched quit a few Hammerwatch mapping tut video's and they explain these things
but they are not simualar to how this SS game works. In Hammerwatch for instance you
need to connect a Areatrigger with a RecAngleShape, but in this editor there are no
such shape entities. So, HOW DO TRIGGERS WORK?!?!?!?!?!
AND BUTTONS, AND KEYCARDS, ETC ETC ETC.

It is a complete mistery to me how they can do a mod contest without showing any tutorials
on how to work with this editor. Really, this makes me so mad!
I have writen the devs a few times now on different channels without any answer, i assume
there are very busy because this game is just released. But how can we make a mod when
we don't know how there editor works???

Sorry when i sound so mad but for days and days i am trying, without ANY LUCK!!!
This is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's tough, I wonder if they have a discord or something like that?

Starting a Discord might be a good idea. Though, we do answer all questions on Steam's forum so if you have any questions we'll be happy to answer.

Thank you for this answer, didn't know that.
Just checked though and questions are indeed answered but at the same time
we can see more questions on the forum about how to work with the editor.
We can indeed extract the original files, like the levels.
But still that doesn't make working with the editor easier.

Personally i have found solutions to nearly all my problems, did take me a
week of very frustrating trial and error though.
All in all i am very glad for this contest, but what when only 2 or 3 people
add a mod, what then? I checked the rules and i can't find anything about how
much people at least should join to make this contest valid. I hope that Crackshell/
Croteam stick with giving the prizes away, even when only a small hand full of people
have joined. Otherwise they really need to say so.
Because as far as i can see now will there be very few mods added, although i hope this
is not the case, really.

Just remember that first next 20 best mods and art submitted take home a SERIOUS SAM digital game pack, so it's unlikely any serious competitor will leave empty handed!

Also sorry everyone but the countdown timer was incorrect, end date remains the same: July 22nd, 2017 18:00:00 -0500

Good luck!

I already was afraid when i read your comment Intense, that i would have less time. But it
seems the countdown timer has now more time so to speak.
I hope it is now correct because i really do rely on this countdown counter, because
i am not sure what time this is; July 22nd, 2017 18:00:00 -0500.
Does this mean 18 - 5 is 13:00 in the afternoon? And then central europe time?
That is why i rely fully on the countdown timer, i still have 2 days and 6 hours now.
thanks,

Leon

The contest has ended, thanks for this great contest.
I do have one other question though, the rules on Modd say this;
"Winners must be able to supply us with their email, home address & shipping location within a week of finishing the contest, to be eligible to receive their prize."
To were do i need to sent this info, to Moddb, to Crackshell, Croteam or Devolver?
