Welcome to the Players Choice: Best Upcoming Mods of 2020 Results! The following mods have been selected by ModDB readers from the Top 100 nominees to determine which mods they are most anticipating for future release.
Honorable Mentions
Before we present the winners, the following mods polled strongly and deserve our attention for either narrowly missing out, or they have previously placed in a best upcoming countdown and are ineligible to place again. These mods have significantly impressed us over 2020, and we are eagerly anticipating their future developments.
2020 COUNTDOWN
Red Alert 3: Corona is a mod of the original Red Alert 3 that has been in development since 2017 and adds a new faction called Celestial Empire, which is based on ancient China. It also reforms naval battles, adds a new sub-faction, an anti-missile system and new units.
An upcoming Half-Life mod, put your feet in the shoes of Barney Calhoun, a security guard at the Black Mesa Research Facility who has no idea that the next few hours are going to change his life forever. Re-live the exciting adventure of Blue Shift, now re-created in the award winning Source engine.
3RD PLACE
Step into some new boots (and a new body), and re-enter the Half-Life universe once more, as the wisecracking, door-kicking zealot known as 'Bad Cop' in the upcoming Half-Life 2: Episode Two mod.
Command a small army of Combine synths and soldiers on a Northern campaign, to capture Dr. Judith Mossman. Tread in the wake of Freeman at Nova Prospekt. Explore the mysterious 'Arbeit Communications' facility and experience the cruelty of duality in the frozen wastes beyond.
Deploy to Black Mesa in the upcoming mod for Half-Life, to halt the next phase of the science team's plan after HECU forces are unsuccessful in stopping Freeman from launching the Omega Satellite delivery rocket... Face another hostile and more powerful alien faction and link up with other Black Ops units to prepare to wipe the facility from the planet once and for all...
An upcoming Singleplayer & Multiplayer total conversion mod of Mount & Blade II Bannerlord, that brings the world of Tolkien into the game. This includes: characters, locations, weapons etc. from The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Silmarillion and other works by Tolkien and media made for his universe.

Holy heck, it was such a great achievement to reach the Top 100, nevermind coming second place in the final vote, thank you greatly to all my supporters! 😁
Congrats to Kingdoms of Arda for winning, Entropy Zero 2 for coming third, and everyone else who made it into the Top 5! 👍
Congrats champ and good luck with your Mod
Congratulations to all winners.. :)
Congrats dude! Good luck with the mod. I'm looking forward to play it.
Thanks for acknowledging the other mods and congrats on an incredible achievement. Something to be massively proud of and I hope will serve as significant motivation for you and your team.
Fall of the republic should be among the top 5 best mods of 2020
This is "Best Upcoming Mod 2020" tho. Mods of the year from the community is later.
Good on the half life series for standing strong, but its too bad we didn't get even a single empire at war or sins of a solar empire mod up here.
A lot of them featured extremely heavily last year
Are we missing some honorable mentions? Because I see a lot more mods tagged here than placed.
Me too. I received an update that Starlight (HL1 mod) is in the list.
Still glad to see so much HL1/2 mods. With HLA’s release, valve fandom is now stronger than ever.
Congrats to Dark Matter and EZ2 who deserved it, and I m impressed that OBM and Guard Duty are still so much praised (or maybe because of now that Black Mesa has been released, the pressure is now 100% on YOU, Tripmine studios!)
Wow! I can't believe we made it to 3rd place upcoming! A huge thank you to all of our fans and followers. Entropy : Zero 2 is coming along really well and we can't wait to get it into the hands of players.
Also really glad to see Dark Matter on here :D !!
Congratulations everyone! This year may not have been the best, but at least it was great when it comes to mods :)
I did not expect us to end 1st O.O
What an honour! and thank you to everyone who voted for Kingdoms of Arda
This is well deserved mate! =D Congratulations to the entire KoA team. I am so glad you have won Best Upcoming Mod. =D
Congratulations to everyone, and I'm very happy to see the Dark Matter on such a high place. As well, as the Guard Duty and Corona in Top 5. The Honorable Mentions are excellent choices as well.
Congratulations to Kingdoms of Arda, well deserved!
kingdoms of arda holy shut (the spelling is wronged on purpose) woohoo
Guard Duty is not a Half-Life 1 mod. This is a remake of Half-Life: Blue Shift on Source engine (like Black Mesa).
Gratulations to the developers of 'Kingdoms of Arda'!
It feels so good to see the HL series getting such strong mod representation still this many years on.
well this mod is quite good, so im not surprise it came in one of the best mods voted
wow, great work from all those people who created such great mods, actually thats surely tons of energy and incredible modding in those!
i should also try my luck next year...
Really glad that Dark Matter made it.
Great work guys! Well deserved, all of you!
Fantastic work on the mods. Would have liked to see Death Wish for Blood here too
