Modders, put your flamethrowers down and wipe the Zed guts off your toolbox - it's time to get to work. Mod DB and TripWire Interactive have joined forces to host the NEW GROUNDS Mapping Contest, with some serious cash on offer - to the tune of $50,000 (USD) up for grabs!

We want you to show us what you can do, what beautiful (or horrid) locations you can whip up that will be a great place to waste some Zed's. Read on to find out everything you need to know about participating, and good luck!

Challenge

There are two main categories for the contest: Survival and Non-Survival.

The Survival category is restricted to the base game mode, “Survival”. We encourage you to implement “VS mode” and “Stand your Ground” into standard “Survival” maps, but it is not mandatory.

The “Non-Survival” category includes the other game modes: “Hold Out”, “Endless”, and any custom mode, provided that the mode is playable using an existing supported game-type as provided in the “WorldInfoProperties” of the map.

If you make a map that is eligible for both “Survival” and “Non-Survival” you can submit your map into both categories, but the map can only receive one prize total.

Prizes

The $50,000 prize pool is divided between both categories, with $25,000 available for Survival, and the remaining $25,000 available for Non-Survival.

Within each category, the winners will receive:

  • 1st place: $10,000
  • 2nd place: $6,000
  • 3rd place: $3,500
  • 4th place: $3,000
  • 5th place: $2,500

Judging

While we will be looking at community feedback about the entries, the final decisions will solely be at Tripwire Interactive’s discretion. The following are key criteria for the “Survival” map mode contest:

  • Gameplay
  • Performance
  • Creativity
  • Atmosphere
  • Complexity
  • Polish

Key criteria for the “Non-Survival” map mode contest follows the same key criteria as a “Survival” map with the only major discrepancy potentially occurring in the gameplay field. Since “Non-Survival” is a broad category, gameplay is summarized by saying if you create a special type of map, all its intended systems need to be operational.

For more detailed information on how entries will be judged, visit the main competition page.

Entering

Entering the contest is as easy as wasting Zeds. Submit your map via the links below and you're golden! You are encouraged to submit your entry to the Steam Workshop, but this is not a requirement for the contest.

NOTE: you can submit more than one entry but are limited to only one prize per category.

Question. As from experience in the last mapping contest. How do you plan to stop competing users from creating bot accounts to purposely down vote other users maps? Although not the complete factor in judgment, still a factor in fair judgment.

There is no user voting this time around. As mentioned in the judging, "while we will be looking at community feedback about the entries, the final decisions will solely be at Tripwire Interactive’s discretion." so ultimately the entries will be played and winners picked by the Tripwire Interactive team.

-Rules 'must be tagged #kf2newgrounds', yet info in the text box in Moddb's file submission area says to tag "#kfnewgrounds"

I've fixed that, #KF2newgrounds is the tag to use.

Great! I am glad no voting this time. Nothing like spending 18+ hours a day for several months on designing a map to have someone come in a trash it for no reason!

That was never the case last time, the community votes helped narrow the entries down but ultimately the top from each wave was judged by Tripwire Interactive to pick the winners. This time there is no user voting component, and any trolling from users will not be tolerated as we appreciate the huge amount of effort that goes into making an amazing map.

One of the best holdout map when I ever seen in KF2 Workshop "Biolapse" by Armand. Guys, just try it and see what I mean: Steamcommunity.com
I hope Tripwire will add this map to the game. That holy.

Hi, i have a question. Im making an objective mode (Weld and repair and maybe VIP Scort). These objectives are required to win so this counts as Survival map or Non-Survival?. Thanks!

The logic to follow, to see where your map fits is:

The Survival category is restricted to the base game mode, “Survival”. We encourage you to implement “VS mode” and “Stand your Ground” into standard “Survival” maps, but it is not mandatory.

The “Non-Survival” category includes the other game modes: “Hold Out”, “Endless”, and any custom mode, provided that the mode is playable using an existing supported game-type as provided in the “WorldInfoProperties” of the map.

If you make a map that is eligible for both “Survival” and “Non-Survival” you can submit your map into both categories, but the map can only receive one prize total.

Can I use assets that I bought from the unreal marketplace? I understand that they are not part of the game. They are not created by me but I do own them. So is that okay?

Yes and no: All maps must be comprised of only original content created by the Entrant(s), or content already contained in Killing Floor 2 and the Killing Floor 2 editor. That means that no part of the map, including but not limited to, models, entities, audio files, textures or any other content can be taken, derived or ported from any other game or third party map.

Assets from other games or maps cannot be used, but other assets if you have rights to redistribute them and mention + credit it in the description as part of your submission - we recommend you submit it, and we will check it is eligible within the rules while judging. We cannot say it will be eligible, but no harm will be done submitting it.

I would not expect them to restart or extend the deadline in any way. But after scouring back a whole year through forums, not finding a post about this, I sure hope Tripwire improves on their community communication. I would have appreciated an invite is all.

I'm CG artist and I like KF2, for me personally it is a nice possibility to create something interesting and of course it can be a good expirience in gaming developing. But I found this contest 2 weeks ago, its too late for make original content without game assets abuse. Good luck guys!
