Post feature Report RSS Dev Blog: Dynamic Ecology

A key aspect of a dynamic world is removing the stale, static creature spawn system. This blog discusses our plans for a dynamic ecology system, and hints at hunting systems, and how the DET will help balance things.

Posted by on

In this, the final video blog of our Kickstarter feature week, we covered one of arguably our most ambitious systems: Dynamic living world ecology. We discuss our plans for the system, and the reasons why we think it is worth taking the time to implement this system, despite the inherent risks associated with it.

We aren't just talking about changing the way creature spawn systems should work in games, but also how players themselves need to change their approach to those creatures in our game, and what systems we are putting in place to help that transition. In our game, hunting actually means something, and it's not just the players hunting the creatures... those creatures are hunting YOU!

really good update guys, i love this game and everything you guys stand for. this game the the exact match of what i have been wanting to program myself for the past 2 years, every aspect and idea perfectly matches what i had always wanted to make and this is just the perfect game. cant wait for your next update :D. the only problem i have with this game the the subscribtion fee you plan to implament, i beleive you would have so much more success with just making it a buy to play and make it a good amount of money for the intial game and maybe for future expansions but other than that it is really good, keep up the good work

Unfortunately running a massive world server, with the specialist hardware we will need for some of our systems, and paying the staff to run and support it all makes it impossible to achieve without the subscription plan in place.

Every game needs ongoing funds, some do it with cash shops and other perks, but that just wouldn't work in the game we are trying to create. Yes, there are some exceptions (guild wars, DDO), but those games had MUCH lower running costs due to their infrastructure running pretty much peer-to-peer, with minimal server requirements for the "lobby" areas.

We made a simple decision early on: Everyone pays the same, everyone gets the same game. There is nothing we could provide in a cash shop that wouldn't affect the game in some way, either directly through balance, or indirectly through the economy. Sorry!

I understand but I know lots of your crowd that sees your game will instantly be turned off and not want to play witch in turn will become much harder to get big, get recognised, and get a good player base in the release. Honestly I'm 100% against sub fees and refuse to pay them anymore :/ but just because this is the perfect game I have always wanted and dreamed about, I'm going to try it and hopefully it will be good enough for me to keep paying and having fun and I will try and help you get fans, I have been keeping up to date with y'all since the beginning of the kickstarter campaign but couldn't pledge because I dident have a credit card at the time :/ sorry.

Ps I live in texas :D

Not a problem at all :)

All we want is a chance to earn your support and patronage. We don't just expect people to pay and play without making sure we deserve it ;)

Thanks for your comments!

ok, thanks for responding to me, it helps to know that you care about the community :D, if you never need anything just message me and i wont hesitate to help.

PS if your looking for any kind of moderator on the forums or in the irc or any kind of community person or tester, i can do that. i can program somewhat but i am a beginner, i know a little java and i am currently learning c# so i don't think i can really help with the programming side of things, and i cant really model very well, but if you need anything community related or moderating or testing i can help
