This is an updated version of the mod I made back in 2009 that, as of 2023, works on the steam version of Defcon.
Back in 2007 I created a map and set of graphics for a Sci Fi idea I had for the game Defcon. What if Earth and an independent Mars had a nuclear war in this game? What if "submarines" were actually ships that could cloak instead of going underwater?
As of version 2.1 the territories are:
1. North America
2. Eurasia
3. Southern Earth (South America + Africa)
4. Luna (The Moon)
5. North Mars
6. South Mars
The names of the cities on the moon are mostly made up, but the names of the cities on Mars are all named after an actual named real-world geographic features located there.
Originally, in version 1, both Earth and Mars were 3 territories and the Moon was split into 3 pieces, each a part of one of the Earth territories. This turned out to be a *terrible* idea when people actually went to play it! The tiny Moon areas made it nearly impossible to defend, and the same went for Mars’s 3 territories. I made the size of Earth, Mars, and the Moon to real-world scale with each other, but as it turns out that’s not great gameplay-wise.
So in 2009 I made version 2, where I modified the territories, (which was very easy to do the way Defcon map files work), to make the Moon it’s own territory, unattached to the Earth territories in any way, and made Mars only have 2 territories.
At some point between then and 2023, Defcon changed how it interprets the interface text for mods. So while the mod still technically ran on the modern Steam version, all the menu text was just a bunch of incomprehensible placeholders. So I have updated this mod to version 2.1 to fix that issue and it should be complete.
At the time I originally made this, I didn't realize there was no maximum for aircraft storage in airbases or carries. I assume the amount you started with was the max for each unit, so the graphics of the units themselves reflect that assumption. If I were to make this mod today, I would increase the size of Mars a bit and re-arrange its two territories. I would also overhaul the graphic assets to be more easily perceivable for gameplay, as I made them a bit too detailed and busy-looking, as well as incorporate the fact that airbases and carries have unlimited capacity. Unfortunately I don't have the original graphical assets I saved in photoshop, and the way Defcon map files work, changing the size of Mars would require re-creating half the map by hand, so I don't have the time at the moment, sorry!
