Well... that's limiting. Surely it's not that uncommon for an Indie developer to go with digital distribution from their own website?
The poll doesn't ask whether indie developers sell their games at their own websites, because they sell them there in almost every case.
Common sense. What's the point asking about something that about 99% developers do?
Though the poll lacks inclusion of "other digital distribution services".
PS Included "Just my own website" option, and changed "Steam exclusive" to "Steam". Sometimes I really wish these polls could be multiple choice ones.
"PS Included 'Just my own website' option" That's what I meant, thanks. Minecraft is the most obvious example of such a game, and there are others besides that and my own game. As such, I don't appreciate the whole "Common sense" thing.
Do you understand the difference between:
1) "just my own website"
2) "my own website"
options?
It seems you misread and then misunderstood my comment. :-) Oh well, that was nothing important anyway.
Let me be very clear this time:
"Just my own website" was what I meant from the beginning. You misunderstood. There are probably two reasons for this misunderstanding:
1) I wasn't as specific as I could've been.
2) You jumped to conclusions. That is, you interpreted an ambiguous statement and accepted the stupidest possible interpretation (let me be clear: what would be stupid on my part; not a stupid way to interpret it) as the correct one, instead of considering I may have intended a more "common sense" interpretation -- one you came to on your own later. Whose fault that is is debatable.
My misunderstanding was that I thought perhaps you'd finally acknowledged my original intended meaning (hence "thanks" and "As such..."). Sorry. On the internet it's hard to strike a balance between giving the benefit of the doubt and spelling everything out in a way that may be perceived as patronising. I didn't want to ask you to specify, and as such we both made the same mistake.
Yes, there's a difference between "my own website" and "just my own website", except in a poll where you can only choose one option. Then they mean the exact same thing. Let me be even more clear: If I see "my own website" and click on it, then see "Steam" and click on that, I will notice that I'm no longer selecting "my own website", and that I should only select that as my final option if I want to indicate that it is my main/only means of distribution.
Sorry, that's my fault. I misunderstood your comment at first, then read it again and intuitively felt like it suggested to include that ("just my own website") option.
Thanks for that :) I wasn't clear. I can't look at my first comment and argue that I was. Thanks for making the change anyway!
Well, "everywhere" - but obviously only if it's financially sound and practically doable. A good deal is a good deal.
I'm not sure about Steam and the like though, as I'm doing the open alpha/beta thing from the very start. (There is like, three enemies and two maps now, so Playable Tech Preview! :-D)
Basically, I want to keep my freedom to go to extremes like turning the game into a space ship air racing game, if that turns out to be more fun than the original design...! That's the whole point of developing incrementally in the open; try all sorts of things, keep those that work, drop those that don't - and not just by half blindly testing stuff on my own.
I think you should mention Indievania - It's one of the places I'd like to distribute : )
