Information regarding the mod, future projects and the team.

Posted by on

These are just some informations regarding the mod and the team.

This is a new project that we hope to be able to show you progress with soon. We have added the pictures of the factions that will be added, the factions are not 100% set and everything is subject to change. Feel free to let us know, if you have any suggestions or ideas. This mod ranges from the beginning of the Hobbit to the beginning of the Return of the King. (We are a very small team and also not experts at modding, although we are adapting to these challenges and are confident we will overcome them).

Here is what you can possibly expect:

  • Custom Maps
  • Custom Units (Custom Armour, Custom Weapons)
  • Custom Buildings
  • Custom Sound/Music
  • ? Custom Campaign ?

We hope we could give you a little insight on what is to come and we also hope that you are as excited as we are about this project!

It's going to take some time, since we are a little team and do not have that much experience, but we are certainly planning on adding dwarves, elves, and Rohan to the mod. If you go to images you can see which factions we are planning to add!

You still have to add Lindon (Elves), Lóthlorien, Fangorn, Bree-land and the Shire - I would make them both one faction -, I suggest you make the Arnor faction as 'Dûnedain Rangers' - because The United Kingdom only came to be again after Sauron was finally defeated [after the war of the One Ring] -, Dale, Beornings and Men of Anduin, the other Dwarves Houses of the extreme east - maybe, I wouldn't say it is necessary -, Dorwinion, Rhûn, Khand, Dunland, Orcs of the Misty Mountains... These are a must for a Lord of The Rings Game - this game of yours, if it has complete factions of these, it will be by far better than Battle for Middle-Earth Games of EA. Of course you won't add them all at once, for then you would take an eternity and probably the mod would go stalled - sleeping for a long time - or be dead before a first release... I am still eagerly awaiting any news from you and your team. I would like to begin modding on this engine Pyrogenesis, though I have no knowledge of modding whatsoever... But as this is a total open source, I believe in the future - being the case the engine is little by little starting to be and get more powerful, greater armies, more coerce and stable formations of units - like real functional phalanxes, square formations, columns, triangular formation, and physical collisions and impacts that affect the ambient and units... If it is a fantasy setting, units and the player should be able to invoke powers, Gods, deamons, or have special abilities humans don't have, but dream to be able to have. I believe you all want this... Maybe I can help you guys, I want to make a better 'Age of Mythology Game' - based mainly on pure mythology and many background History [as a fusion of History and Mythology] -, though I really like the Arda Universe of Tolkien. I have another suggestion: I think you should follow Tolkien's descriptions of weapons and armour and not Weta's designs. Some people think they are the same, but they are completely different from the movies, they are more closely related with the weaponry and armoury of ancient civilizations, with armour basically consisting of mail and lamelar armour, hauberks, some gauntlets and leg protections - basically no plate armour save very rare exceptions -, ancient round shields such as the Greek Hoplon or Roman Shields [Medieval Roman also] or Viking Shields [Rohan] or early medieval shields, tall helmets for Gondor, Rohan, and Elves, Elves did not have curved blades save rare designs and exceptions - they usually, almost universally used straight blades, as well as the men of the west, Rohan, Dale, and also Dwarves -, only Rhûn's armies had scimitars - they were eastern men -, Orcs, Uruk-Hai of Isengard - and also of Mordor [curved blades are associated by Tolkien with cruelty or ugliness as it seems {that may be considered a prejudice, some Ancient Greek blades were a little curved, but we are talking about Arda's Universe of Tolkien and his descriptions match with this idea}] -, there are never pikes described in Tolkien's warfare - even in the times of Morgoth -, only some not so long but longer lances [but no pikes]; and FINALLY, of course, Weta's design are copied by every game and mod about the Lord of the Rings - though Peter Jackson did not wrote the Lord of the Rings and its story -, as if the movies should dictate our expectations of how the creatures, weaponry and armour should look like... Well, that was my one hundred cents comment.

What do you guys think?

Hey, thank you first of all for all this input, let me first say that we are an extremely small team (2) and that means that progress is going to be slow on such a huge mod, and if one of us needs some time off or is not available for some time, we aren't able to continue until that person is back. We have thought about all these factions you've mentioned, but for now we will focus on the bigger ones like Isengard, Gondor, Rohan etc. As for following the design of tolkien instead of weta's, we are very inexperienced and this is the first mod we are making, it's easier to have some kind of reference pictures from the movies to model these things, so we will probably stick with the movie's aesthetics.

Well, thank you for your answer! I was eagerly awaiting it. For the main factions that you are working right now, I think that's totally O.K., I don't think that with a such a small team you would be able to finish the mod - if it were to complete all factions possible according to the lore -. That said, I think I will make a submod of your mod about the aesthetics of units - buildings and 2D art and whatnot -, if - let's hope yes! - it will at least be in an alpha released state sometime from now... But I really hope first to make a great ancient mythological mod of '0 A.D.'!

Weren't you stating that you would provide us with some new content soon - update -? Not that I think you should, it appears to me that you stated that - so it was expected -.

Yes, we do have some cool stuff that we haven't shared yet, but we had some time issues with exam season etc. and modding is very time consuming, we are also doing this in our freetime so sometimes me might decide to rather do something else for the moment.
