It looks like Mercurio beat me to it, as I was about to ask the same question as him/her. Right now the premise is extremely similar (as everyone has pointed out already) to Dwarf Fortress. In fact, I don't there's a single non-ui feature that's not in DF. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not accusing you of anything, but I'm just wondering what direction you'll be taking this in? What will make this game unique?

Once again, like Mercurio said, I think Towns (which I still think is one of the better efforts to have hit Desura) recently did a very good job of infusion the DF-inspired design with hints of Majesty (the hero-system). So what are your ideas? Obviously you're never going to get even close to the endless depths of DF's gameplay, so you probably want to end up with a description for your game other than "DF Lite" :-)

Otherwise, this IS looking quite splendid. At first it looked so similar to what we've already seen, but then I saw the engine at work. Seamless splicing, zooming in and out, very fast pathfinding, an intuitive and easy -to-use UI, etc. It really looked like very, very solid work so far. Obviously you still have a lot of work cut out for you, but I really enjoyed what I saw here. Good job.

May I ask, what languages/engines/libraries are you using to develop this? Always interested in that sort of thing when it comes to more complex games like this.

Keep up the good work!

(P.S.: I do advise you to remove the soundtracks as quickly as possible though. They totally ruin the atmosphere!)

Congratulations! From my (admittedly rather short) experience it seemed like a real quality game, it really did stand out from all the other IndieDB games. I might pick it up soon!

Totally agree with you. The game looks quite charming, and I'm always a sucker for some puzzle/platforming. But never forget about indie rule #1: "No demo, no sale!"

Looks really, really nice guys. Unfortunately you forgot about Indie Rule #1: always have a demo. You also forgot about Indie Rule #2: ALWAYS have a demo.

I know I may sound harsh, but for a lot of people (me included) not having the ability to try the game before they buy is a deal-breaker, not matter how low the price may be.

Good to see this phenomenal game on Desura! I've never installed it before, but I guess I'll now move over to the Desura version :-)

Huh, what a surprise! I heard Illwinter was doing CoE3 some time ago, and I was sort of expecting it to show up on Shrapnel's front page any day now.
Suddenly I casually check Desura and WHAM! CoE3 released! I had no idea you guys were going to launch it here. What a lovely surprise :-)

Loved Dominions 3 to tiny bits, so I'll probably check this out as soon as I have the money. However, I sort of have to agree with the people complaining about the lack of a demo. It's just an all-around bad idea. I know I love Illwinter games now, so I can buy without worrying to much. However, I first learned about your games by playing the Dominions 3 demo (which was a great demo, because it included the superb tutorial map), but for people who are not familiar with your games, 25€ is a huge leap of faith.

Perhaps this is because it isn't a good fit for the PSP at all? The only reason why Minecraft will have moderate to great success on the iWhatever is because of a complete lack of critical users on the system.

What's wrong with adding vehicles to the game? A nice tank to blow up those blocks seems just fine by me. And I wouldn't mind overviewing the player contruction/destruction of a map from the cockpit of a plane.

Also, "This is AoS not TF2" is a pretty stupid argument considering the creator of the game destribes it as "a mix between Minecraft and TF2".

No need to be a **** and laugh at all his (not all that great, I admit) suggestions.

TheGameSquid @ IOTY Players Choice - Indie of the Year

Very happy to see that Unepic and SpaceChem made it to the list. I was afraid they were going to be ignored. Atom Zombie Smasher's entry pleases me as well, but I was pretty confident it was going to be included considering it was part of the HIB. Frozen Synapse's place is obviously well deserved as well!

I'm going to sound a bit like an *** here, but I can't help but wonder why Trine 2 is featured here and why people voted on it? To me it seemed like all the game had to offer was pretty graphics. Gameplay was a bit dull IMO (and I like platformers and puzzle games).

In the end, I'm also very, very happy with Terraria's first spot. It managed to break free of the (slightly ridiculous) Minecraft comparisons by melding the best elements of that game with those of beloved console classics such as Metroid and Castlevania while removing much of the tedium and adding a whole lot more fun and "game" to it. Secondly, I think it prevailed by showing it's devotion to polishing the game and adding more content. When it was released, the game was not finished, but it was very playable, and this was all accomplished in a very short amount of time without too much alpha funding and indie exposure. Patch 1.1 is one of the most impressive patches I've ever seen in any game, and stands in stark contrast to the lousy state it's "big brother" Minecraft was "released" in.

Well done Re-Logic!

On an embarrassing side-note: I have never before heard of Ace of Spades, but that's probably due to the fact that I'm not much of an avid MP player, let alone in the shooter form.

Anyway, since it was included in the Indie Royale bundle, I'm a happy man again ;)

Ok guys, I was about to pre-order on Desura, but I still have one small last question:

The game currently costs 9,59€ on Desura (that's 12€ minus 20%), while it costs 7,5€ on the website. It's a small difference, so I don't really mind that much (as I said before, having all those Alpha pre-orders on Desura is nice), but what exactly is the reason for this difference in price?

I have a little question guys: do you plan on releasing the game on Desura, for Alpha Funding perhaps? I'm interested in the game, but there are so many good looking games that I'd like to support by Pre-ordering that it's hard to keep track of them. It would be nice to see them all grouped in a nice handy place.

That's odd, it should be there. In fact, when I press "Browse All" it appears on the first page :)

Try searching for it in the search bar on the top right corner.

However, I do indeed think the interface of Desura needs some work. I love the idea behind it, but it's not entirely up to snuff yet :)

Any plans on releasing the Creeper World games on Desura? I think they would be a great fit there. I buy so many games that buying them straight from the developer has become a bit of a hassle for me (I used to love doing so, but I've bought so many it's hard to keep track of).

I know the games have already been added to GamersGate, but I'm not a huge fan of that site. I rely solely on Steam, Desura, GOG and straight from the developer purchases.

It would be cool to see the games appear here. Loved the demos :)

TheGameSquid @ As a modder how much do you roughly spend in a year on games?

Well, that is if you buy "AAA" games at the full 50$ when they come out. The last time I did that was... 1,5 year ago. And before that it must have been since Half-Life 2. There just aren't a whole lot of games these days that warrant that ridiculous price tag. I'm always willing to shell out 15$ for an indie of course. I always have more than enough games to play so I can wait for prices to drop.

Yeah, I know! Paying honest working folk for their hard work on creating a good piece of art! MADNESS!

... OR IS IT?

I, for one, am very much looking forward to the commercial release. I see no reason why I wouldn't want to pay chineseroom if this is a great experience. I'm more inclined to give 20$ to a unique game like this than to any other typical game out there.

I'm overjoyed to see people making the jump from a Mod-project to a commercial game, and I hope many more get the opportunity to do so!

TheGameSquid @ DDOS causing system instability

I just don't get it. What is anyone hoping to achieve by attacking a website such as this? Surely no-one is hurt by the development of free Mods and small-scale indie games? ModDB is a great initiative made by people who really care about both the players and the developers. What did they do to deserve such a harsh attack on their website? Things like these really do make me sad :(

All the developers obviously deserve a place on this list, but there should have been more "honourable mentions" here. I think Mode7 (of Frozen Synapse fame) specifically deserved some extra attention. They're a small team, but they're highly professional and in-touch with the community at the same time. Not to mention their excellent game.

TheGameSquid @ Survivors of Ragnarök - Making Things Go Boom!

It may seem kind of standard, but of course he would need to be taken out by cannons mounted on the towers of the fortress. Explosives always fit with Dwarves, because it helps to portray them as brash, brutal fellows that enjoy using considerable force without thinking too much about it first. And the cannons would fit into their entire metalworking background too. Plus, explosives may well come unto play into the game as a way to clear large parts of cavern systems, quarries, etc.

Either that, or Dwarves flying on giant hawks to assault AAA's ship! The Hawk-Riders will then use cunning tactics such as dropping large rocks on AAA or crashing into the ship to defeat him!

Or you could always use the Wiggles. THEY'LL KNOW WHAT TO DO!

The direction controls were WAY too touchy, and I found the decision to make the character walk fast after a while instead of mapping "run" to a separate button a but odd, but other than that the game already has a sort of "natural" feel to it. So like JohnnyMaverik I think you made a good start.
