Well, it looks like launching the game from the Desura client should work fine now. Thanks, Desura staff!

If the game fails to launch, please try reinstalling, and please let us know if any issue comes up.

Have fun!

Hi friends!

The good news is that the update to version 0.805 is online! Widescreen and all!

The bad news is that there's been some executable naming errors and, thus, both the Windows and Linux Desura clients fail to open the game when it's launched. We are already talking to Desura staff in order to fix this, but, for now, there are three ways to circumvent this problem:

- you can rename the executable accordingly to the warning message;

- you can simply double-click the file itself;

- you can play the standalone builds, which are also updated.

We expect this error to be fixed very soon.

Thank you all for the support and have fun!

Hi paperjon,

We're very sorry for the trouble and also very glad you told us about it: our Linux test machine is 32bit, so thank you for the important feedback!

The next update — which should be available in a week or so — will be 100% focused on bug-fixes and new features, and we'll be sure to do add a 64bit Linux build along with the 32bit version. Just for the sake of completeness, would you mind sharing with us the OS you're running?

That said, we truly hope this unexpected library-installation session does not detract from the game experience.

Once more, thank you for informing us about this and be assured we'll do our best to fix this issue on the next update.

Until then, have fun, take care, and please let us know is any other issue comes up!

Hi there!

Thank you very much for the kind comment! We've put a lot of effort in this boss fight and it's a great joy for us to know you are enjoying it!

This week, we'll probably publish another update with a couple of bug fixes so that we can start implementing stages 2-1 to 2-10.

Until then, take care and, once more, thank you very much for the kind support — now go show that Reaper who's the boss! ;)

That's great news, my friend!

Thank you very much for the support and for the uplifting compliments! It made our day!

As for Avast, there might be a way to add the game to a safe list so that you can leave it running, keeping your system protected. Usually, these programs keep some sort of log of blocked executables, so that might help setting it up.

Once more, thank you very much for the kind support and have fun!

Well, I've just tested the Windows installer and it's fine.

Is there any chance your antivirus software is deleting the game executable?

EDIT: And sorry for the divided reply.

On a Windows system, the executable can be found in 'Program Files (x86)\Desura\Common\bernie-needs-love\', and is named 'Bernie Needs Love.exe'.

Hi!

I am really sorry to know you are having trouble launching the game and I'll do my best to help you through it.

If you are running the Linux version, it seems the official Desura client is still very unstable, so it is recommendable to install Desurium. You can get the source code of Desurium and compile yourself, or you can install the Stable Release — which is much faster.

Personally, I've been having an issue with launching the game on Ubuntu through the client — but, as I checked with the Desura staff and they said it was working, I suppose it's something on my client. If I right-click the game in the client and create a desktop shortcut, however, the game launches fine by double-clicking the icon.

If you are running the Windows client, I suggest uninstalling the game and rebooting the system before attempting another install. We've tested the Windows client with this update and it runs fine.

If none of these options work, please let us know your system specifications so that we can troubleshoot this together.

Also, please remember you can always download the standalone versions, which are available both for Windows and for Linux right here on Desura.

Finally, thank you very much for your support and for the kind comment. We are very happy to have you with us and we hope this initial difficulty does not detract from your experience playing our game.

I'll be expecting news.

Thanks, good luck, and have fun!

Hello friends!

It's out!!! We finally managed to update Bernie Needs Love to version 0.8!!!

We're really sorry for taking three months working on this, but we are sure you'll understand why we put so much effort in this when you play the new stage 1-10...

Thank you all very, very much for the patience and for the support, and now go have some fun with the awesome boss-fight we made for you and start getting ready for the next 10 Carnival levels on which we are currently working!

Hi friends!

Sorry for the delay... Anyway, we are working on the final details of the boss fight and expect to complete this update to 0.8 in the next week!

If you haven't watched the last video dev log, check it out on our profile and see a bit the next stage and its creation process. By the way, please ignore the 0.79 version number: it should be 0.8, but I have a tendency to mess up version numbers, always triple-checking it every time before uploading an upgrade...

Well, thank you all for the ongoing support and have fun getting to level 1-9 if you haven't already! If you have completed all available levels, however, remember there is a secret level hidden somewhere — can you find it? ;)

Hi friends!

I just want to let you know we are working hard on a very special surprise for you on level 1-10!

We might publish a news article with more details but, either way, we expect to release a new update for Bernie Needs Love next week.

As always, thank you all for the kind support and positive feedback!

Hi Silverhawk85!

Indeed, we wish we could have included more levels in the last update but, like I said, there was a lot to fix and stabilize as well.

We are very glad to know you enjoyed stage 1-9 — thanks for letting us know! Have you found the secret level yet?

Anyway, there should be a news article soon and a new update in the next couple of weeks.

Take care and have fun!

Hello friends!

We are very glad to let you know the update to version 0.79 is ready and waiting to be approved by the Desura staff!

We are very sorry for taking longer than expected working on this new build, but we really wanted to iron some annoying bugs off, and add some cool new content — including a hidden stage! All in all — even though it seems version 1.0 won't be ready before June — you, our dear supporters, can rest assured we will always do our best to provide you with the most amazing game we can create.

We truly hope you like it!

Thank you all for the support and please let us know if you have any issue or idea!

P.S.: We have some exciting news about the Linux and Android ports. For more details, please stay tuned for a news article in the next few days!

Hi Silverhawk85!

I expect to complete the next update this weekend (probably tomorrow) — it's full of bug fixes, and adds two new stages (1-9, and a hidden one).

Unfortunately, it took us longer to comb off the errors we found and to create new content than we expected, and we are very sorry for the delay — as soon as the next update is online, I'll publish a news entry showing a bit of what we have ready for the next stages, the current status of the Linux and Android ports, and a bit of the other projects we've been working on simultaneously.

That said, once more, we are very sorry for the update hiatus of March — our intention is to implement 1-9 this weekend, 1-10 still in April, 2-1 to 2-10 in May, and 3-1 to 3-10 in June. We know that's two months after our initial release date, but we'd rather provide you guys with the best game we can make, as we feel a rushed release would not be respectful to all the support you and the others have been giving us.

Anyway, we're are very excited about version 0.79 and we think you'll be pleasantly surprised when you find its secrets! Until then, you can have some puzzle-solving fun with Meatballphobia, our entry for the clay.io HTML5 competition: Meatballphobia.clay.io

Thank you once more, Silverhawk85! It's a relief to know everything is working fine now — I guess I should probably add this solution to a troubleshooting section of the readme in case others find the same issue.

By the way, we are already working on the next stages, and should have another update ready next week.

Until then, have fun and take care!

Hi Silverhawk85 — thanks for letting us know! Unfortunately, we need a little more information, because we are not managing to reproduce the bug over here.

During gameplay, there are two ways of leaving the current stage and returning to level selection: you can either die and press 'X' ('B' on the gamepad), or you can finish the level and press 'Z' ('A' on the gamepad). There is also the possibility of pressing 'ESC' ('Back' on the gamepad) anytime to quit the game ('Y' [gamepad 'A'] will confirm you want to exit, 'N' [gamepad 'B'] will cancel and return to the game). In which of those circumstances is the game freezing with you?

That said, it's nice to know you enjoyed the new level!

I'll be expecting your reply.

Hello, my good friends!

Right after uploading version 0.78, we realized there were still some bugs that needed fixing. Being so, I have just uploaded version 0.781 with the following changes:

- Fixed several errors related to toggling the background music on and off and switching from level selection to an actual level.

- Fixed the horizontal offset of moving level icons during level selection by applying a correction in the x axis.

- Fixed opening level 1-8 with the key on European keyboards (the same happened when opening the aforementioned level with the key on American keyboards).

I'm still working on a new article to describe what we managed to implement so far and what is expected for the next builds — mainly because we want to include a nice video to show off the new level and the Xbox 360 controller support.

Anyway, the update to v0.781 should be available pretty soon.

Once more, thank you very much for the support and have fun!

Hello friends!

I have just uploaded version 0.78, which is a major update with many fixes and new features — including a new level, a new subarea (Downtown), a new music track, and Xbox 360 controller support! Now, as usual, it is only a matter of waiting for approval from the Desura staff.

Here is the list of changes:

- Changed the speed of the dead Bernie message, which is now faster.

- Added stage 1-8, which introduces a new subarea called Downtown, and a new darker, moodier music track to go with the new atmosphere.

- Changed the motion logic of everything that was affected by the framerate, so that such game elements are no longer framerate dependent.

- Changed the physics logic of bouncing in order to prevent jerky movement when performance drops.

- Added compatibility with the Xbox 360 controller.

- Fixed help screen bugs that allowed for inadequate input.

That's it! I'll try to post a news article to show the changes in more detail, and to talk a bit about what is planned for the next versions. Have fun and thanks for the support!

You're welcome, my friend! In a matter of fact, it's me who should thank you for bringing the issue to my attention! So... Thank you! ;)

It's taking a bit longer than I expected for the update to be approved, though — but I guess it's because it's Saturday and, being so, the Desura staff might have a bigger queue of uploads to process.

Either way, when the update to version 0.778 is actually available for you to download, please let me know if it indeed solves the keyboard issue you've found. If it doesn't, I'll look for another solution.

Hello, friends!

I just wanted to let you know I have just uploaded a new update! As soon as the Desura staff approves it, you should be able to download the new version.

I'm still working on the 8th stage, but I thought it would be nice to release version 0.778 before 0.8 in order to fix the issues some of you have encountered and kindly reported.

Here is the list of changes:

- Bugfix: score over help screen during level selection;
- Bugfix: gap between water tiles that appeared in some systems (with no need for an alternative build with a different scaling method, phew!);
- Bugfix: level 5 score reset after quitting and reopening the game;
- Bugfix: European keyboards now should recognize the <Z> key;

Once more, thank you all for the support, for the kind words, and for letting us know of those issues! I hope you have a fun weekend playing the game free of those nasty little bugs! ;)

Thanks — it means a lot to us to know that you like our little game!

Thanks also for letting us know about the water tiling bug! Yesterday, actually, we saw it happen for the first time and spent some hours trying to find out what causes it. The update we expect to upload this weekend will have it fixed for the windowed mode, but we might have to upload a separate version (which will be available to everyone who bought the game) that uses a different scaling mode to fix the issue both for the windowed and the fullscreen mode, the downside being the fullscreen game becomes a little smaller. As soon as we discover a way to fix this issue with the main scaling mode, we will drop the alternative version. We are very sorry you are one of the few who encountered this bug, by the way.

We are surely going to port the game to Android once the desktop version is complete. As for iOS, we would love to do it, but it might take us a little more time because, first, we have to get ourselves at least a Mac mini and an iPhone — but it's on our list, nonetheless.

I'm already working on the 8th stage, which we were hoping to release this weekend with the aforementioned update, but I might end up uploading a bugfix version first to solve the issue you've found and a few other unexpected bugs other players told us about (namely, the score display over the help screen during level selection, and European keyboards forcing players to press 'Y' when it should be 'Z').

Our intention is to release the full version when we have 30 levels, which will cover 3 different areas: downtown (already included in the beat up to level 7, as you've seen), a carnival parade, and the beach.

Once more, thank you very much for letting us know about the issue you've found and for the kind support! I'll do my best to upload a fix for the tiling bug you've found later tonight. 'Till then, I hope this issue doesn't spoil your fun!

Congratulations — I'm glad to hear that! I'll start working on the 8th level tonight, so there's a big chance of another update this weekend.

As for the different keyboard layouts, it just occurred to me that another simpler solution consists in simply giving the 'Y' key the same functions already assigned to 'Z' (and, in the case of the exit menu, vice-versa). I'll also make sure our next games take this in consideration, rest assured! No more finger acrobatics for our European friends, as far as we're concerned! ;)
