Valdis Story: Abyssal City

Game review

This game has the kind of polish many big name studios would die to achieve. This isnt a half assed little side project. This is a deep, richly detailed homage to the action/rpg genre (Metroidvania!) In particular, this reminds me much of Symphony of the Night, with more of a JRPG type art feel. it works. The art style is unique, while still conjuring fond memories of some of the great works of the last 10-20 years. The gameplay is pretty refined and solid, even while slapping around on a keyboard as I have done! (One day, I swear I shall own a gamepad!!) The music is perfect for this game, again being atmospheric and perfect for this mysterious lost city beneath the sea, while also making me grin ruefully as I would remember countless hours spent crawling around Draculas castle on my old PS1, or getting engulfed in whatever tale Squaresoft was currently baiting me with.. This is a fabulous, professional grade, lovingly crafted game and it is overwhelmingly worth the 15 bucks admission!

Knytt Underground

Game review

I am a great fan of Nifflas' work, having already played through most all of his previous work. He is one of my favorite indie devs, and his mastery of the platformer genre is second to none. Knytt Underground is the most recent evolution of his proven formulae, consisting of dark de-emphasized foregrounds with gorgeous animated background art that creates an environment that is dark and myseterious, but peaceful and earthy.. They are haunting worlds that beg you to just spend time in them and soak up the atmosphere. This is complimented by a great ambient/electronic musical score which is a perfect mesh with the visual style. (Sidenote, this soundtrack along with much of his other music is free off his website - I play it often in my studio when deadlines loom. It does a great job of getting you in the zone!) Anyhow I gave it a 10 because it deserves a 10. The level of ambiance and immersion is very uncommon for a platformer and should be experienced by anyone who enjoys them!

Darkout

Game review

This game is fantastic - I love these action/sandbox/platformer things, having played too much Terraria, Edge of Space and this wonderful game as well as any others I can find.. This one stands out though, with the graphical treatment really being elevated to the next level. This game is gorgeous, and really does a great job of making the world seem alien and mysterious and a sense of both wonder and danger permeates the mood at all times. The light and dark mechanism is far more important than in other games of this type. The world is a dark place, and the animals have evolved around this. Light actually harms them and effective combat involves illuminating them enough that they first lose their darkness aura, leaving them far more vulnerable to a conventional assbeating! Exploration is dangerous and full of trepidation, but rewarding too as you slowly return with more and more materials to upgrade your shelter from a desperate refuge to a fully equipped bastion from which you may challenge all odds. I enjoy this one very much and wish the devs all the best with this fantastic game!
