GTA 5 Modding

LoneRangerz Blog

Modding video games is pretty popular, especially on the PC, where it’s easiest. PC mods are usually downloadable files that alter your game in one way or another. Some games only receive a few mods—maybe a game is notorious for glitches, and some dedicated fans create their own patch. On the other hand, some games have lots of mods. The Grand Theft Auto series is an example of that. You can find entire online communities devoted to creating GTA mods. Fans have created—and are still creating—mods for every GTA game released on the PC, including the earliest ones. So far, Grand Theft Auto V has been left off of that list, because it was only available on consoles, but in the months ahead, GTA V’s PC release will at last hit the shelves. Let the modding commence.

At this point, we can only speculate on the sorts of GTA V mods we might see. The game looks beautiful, which is one of the big selling points of these new ports, but fans still might find ways to push the graphics even further, or even knock them back for a more old-school appearance. When GTA V launched on consoles, some fans liked the new HUD so much, they created a mod to let them use it in GTA IV.

Then there are the skins fans might create. GTA IV also has mods that turn vehicles into police cars or recognizable vehicles from the Resident Evil series, so you never know what people might come up with for GTA V. Many people like to play with different character models, too. You might replace your GTA protagonist’s character model with that of Jill Valentine, to go with your Resident Evil theme. Or maybe you want to enjoy the weirdness of driving through the streets as Spider-Man.

Maybe, when GTA V comes out on PC, you’ll want to play through something completely different, even while you’re still playing GTA V. If that makes little sense, we’d like to direct you to the total conversion mods, which have far-reaching effects on the game. From mods that fill San Andreas with legendary monsters such as Bigfoot, to an even larger one that creates an Evil Dead scenario, these mods are guaranteed to give you a new experience. GTA V is a rich, powerful game, so it has a lot of potential.

On the other hand, you might be just fine with the way the game looks and plays—in fact, you like it so much, you want to play more, and Rockstar just isn’t giving you enough extra content. Take a look at the mods that already exist. A story mod for GTA III, a mission pack for GTA IV… you’ll have plenty to do. And maybe you don’t even need to go that far. Past GTA games have seen mods that add in new islands, buildings, vehicles, and more. If there’s anything you’d like to see a little more of in GTA V, the PC version might be able to do it.

Some GTA PC mods add things not directly related to the gameplay, such as one GTA IV mod that provided an accessible interface through which players could make new missions. There are hundreds—thousands—of GTA mods out there already, and once the PC version of GTA V comes out, there will be even more.
