PART 2 Continued from above:

I'm not an historian by trade; I'm a lawyer. But the study of law hinges on learning, understanding and interpreting history. Historical accounts are written by the victors, not the vanquished.

Graves that were traditionally assumed to be those of male warriors are being re-examined, and, thanks to the emergence of DNA science, are actually being re-classified as the graves of female warriors of the ancient world. Women were far more common than was assumed. (Especially in the Celtic culture.) We are also cultivating a new understanding of the role of women gladiators. When once we believed they were mythical, we are discovering they actually did exist. How rare they were is still unknown.

Female warriors were not uncommon in the Viking Culture, either. Whether they sailed with their male children and male counterparts as a family, or whether they came over in all-female ships to conquer, evidence is being unearthed that tell us that some Viking warriors were women.

Our assumptions about the "myth" of the Amazons are also being revised. See: the Amazons: Lives and Legends of Warrior Women across the Ancient World, see: Amazon.com.

Here you'll find a collective effort of people creating a compendium of Powerful Women Warriors from 1500BCE to 1500 CE. See: Geni.com Also check out this interesting article about female warriors in the Middle Ages. See Womenshistorymonth.wordpress.com

For anyone with more than a passing interest in this topic, let me recommend Jean Davis Kimball's Warrior Women: An Archaeologist's Search for History's Hidden Heroines, Amazon.com. She does a great job separating fact from fiction, having spent a lot of time living and working in the Russian steppes where DNA has uncovered the modern descendants of the ancient amazons. Also, check out Wiki's section on women in ancient warfare: En.wikipedia.org

For those who feel history and archeology are too dry and dull, this is a thoroughly enjoyable article, very humorous but competent. Top 10 Badass Female Warriors, see:
Listverse.com

These is for people who find this topic of interest. I hope that some might benefit from it. I'd be THRILLED if some game developer actually put out a game that relied on the Xena Warrior Princess characters. (It's one of my all time favorite shows.) Very sorry it is so wordy. It's a topic deserving far better than I've given it. If this isn't worthwhile, the OP can hopefully just delete it.

"If you think a bra-and-thong counts as armor, I'm not sure what to say. CollegeHumor already busted this myth in a way I like, so I’ll be brief: the purpose of armor is to protect the five most vital organs (brain, heart, kidneys, liver, and lungs) against specific weapons. Leather and metal armors are designed to deflect glancing melee attacks (but were still vulnerable to piercing weapons), while modern Kevlar can stop small caliber rounds in their tracks."

This is a topic near and dear to my heart. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm an old spinster/gamer who gets flamed when I complain about the depiction of women in gaming. I prefer to play as a female, but find it humiliating to have to dress like a stripper. Oh, and WHY??? don't I love dressing in two bandaids and a cork bc, after all, they have better stats than real armor! (Since we "all" know that "girlz" can't game as well as guys so we need that extra "protection". Talk about demeaning and condescending! I hope that they would never consider doing that to African Americans!

What guy who would want to appear in a diaper on the battlefield?! Oh, and PLEASE! What is this obsession that women toons have enormous breasts? Anatomically, that makes no sense. Female athletes convert body fat to muscle. (Bye-bye double d's!) Setting that aside, the breasts that these guys draw for female characters would be painful and create back problems for any woman unfortunate enough to be stuck with them! (And yes, I mean STUCK with them.) I spend a lot of time with women, especially professional women. We don't consider breasts like that to be attractive (or even desirable.)

No offense to anyone, but what's up with that? Are the artists who design female characters in games (or comics) thirteen year old males just entering puberty? Grow up, guys!

While I absolutely LOVE the work you've done, I'll take exception to one sliver:

"Although there are some exceptions (Joan of Arc, Queen Boudicca, Artemisia, Grace O'Malley to name a few), a historical overview shows that very few women served in a military capacity before World War I, and most of those were non-combat medical or logistic duties."

Well...that depends on what you mean by "military" capacity. Do you mean "formal" military? Is that signed up and processed? (We are discovering that women served in combat even during the Revolutionary War, but they dressed and "passed" as men. We have pictorial evidence for the Civil War! See: The Women Who Fought as Men: Rare American Civil War pictures show how females disguised themselves so they could go into battle. Read more: Dailymail.co.uk

While the women in "combat" can't come close to the numbers of their male counterparts, it's actually a myth that women ONLY started serving in "combat" relatively recently. Consider, for example, The Amazons of Dahomey: An Account of the Female Warriors of an African Kingdom (http://www.amazon.com/Amazons-Dahomey-Account-Warriors-African-ebook/dp/B00WOGEBZI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461879167&sr=8-1&&tag=dbolical-20#038;keywords=amazons+of+Dahomey)

Any idea when you'll be looking for testers? Have you considered using Steam? I'd Greenlight this game immediately! :)

Are you considering offering pre-orders with early access? I'm excited about this game - it looks really impressive! I'd love a space game like Freelancer that permits trade. <3

Call me crazy - as a woman who can't resist the opportunity to explore space, trade and kick a little alien (& pirate) arse, VOD looks like it has tons of potential. I'm a huge fan of Freelancer, Egosoft's X Series, Privateer, etc. I don't enjoy games that require a player to control an entire fleet - too much like work - so I was impressed by VOD enough to buy it. It would be really cool to play on Steam! Any thoughts of issuing Steam keys eventually??

Thank you for creating a space trading/exploration game. This is a genre which doesn't attract the most talent these days; so it is so inspiring when smart developers invest resources in such games. I'm looking forward to being able to do great things with VOD.

The objectification of female bodies gets really OLD. When will game developers stop treating gamers like we are all fourteen year old males? I am a middle aged (professional) woman and a gamer who prefers to play as a female. I am sick to death of my avatar always wearing "armor" that amounts to two band aids & a cork, Sexism ruins gaming for me. The Mass Effect Trilogy was so refreshing bc Fem Shep looked and acted like a warrior - not a stripper. Actually, I cannot believe it is 2013 and someone needs this explained. O.o

I completely agree. Microsoft was INSANE to decline to make a sequel. People are STILL playing Freelancer and I wish someone would take up the challenge of releasing the sequel or something akin to one!

Sorry - I thought I was logged in when I replied... It will post under anonymous. :( Anyway, as I said, you should take all the time you need and not rush this... It looks fantastic so why risk it just to launch a few months early! If you plan on having beta testers at some point, I'd be very willing.

Greatly looking forward to this game... I saw Q4 of 2013 for ETA; does that look pretty solid or do you think you'll need more time? Have you thought of using Steam's Greenlight?

I just read the comments on the game page - someone else already told you the "basic combat" tutorial does not exist. I clicked on it and no instructions come up. Someone wrote about it last summer. I just wanted you guys to know that it still isn't working.

Fantastic game, btw! This was one of the first space games I ever played. It's thanks to Naev that I am such a huge fan of space games. Strategy games I can do without - but the RPG's like Freelancer I love and always will. Many thanks for all of your hard work. I am so grateful you didn't allow Naev to become abandonware. That would have been a real shame.
