First of all: I haven't played the mod YET, but I think I can help you.

The error is probably that you are playing the game in a different language (for example German). You can fix that, if you rename the MasterTextFile [The Mod-> Data-> Text | I highly recommend you to save the existing text file of your language first] into the english language [for example MasterTextFile_German.dat -> MasterTextFile_English.dat].

The demo (the only released version with a campaign in it) was for homeworld remastered. And, as I mentioned before, it's now broken and don't work anymore.

In Conclusion it can be said: Right now you cannot play the campaign(s) of the stargate mod.

No. They've made a demo, but it's broken since the last update of the game. Right now they are working on a new version for Homeworld remastered, which will include "more of the mod", than there was shown in the demo.
There are no (working) releases for Homeworld Remastered yet.
