Hey guys, this is our first IOTY Madness drop, tell us which arm you like more for the right arm! If you like these, be sure to give us a like on facebook: Facebook.com
Looks great! But somehow the "display" looks like its pasted on. Maybe a small thin frame should add more "Realisticness" to it?
Just an idea, but still... Great job!
Thanks!
which one do we like better... umm.... lets see, cool gadget or no cool gagdet... easy choice, I like the right one with the display. lol.
I agree that it needs a little something to make the display look more like it belongs there. Although I think perhaps(rather than a thin frame) it might look better if it was somewhat indented into the armor. (this could already be the case, its hard to tell in the render. If so then disregard my suggestion :D )
Although, one other thing I have to say. Wouldn't it be more convenient to have a display like that on the left wrist?
Especially if it serves some use in gameplay, I would recommend swapping the arms. If you think about looking at a display like that while holding a gun, you would need it on the left. (so that your right hand can remain in place on your weapon.)
I actually agree with you, but I forgot to tell Luis that, since the concept had it on the right (for some reason), and I didn't realize it till afterwards. It is a bit late to fix now, but I am thinking we can go without the screen for now and maybe re-visit the arms later.
Couldn't you just swap the left and right arms? Flipping a model takes very little effort.
It will only be more difficult to fix later.
You can't swap them cause it is more than just flipping the model. And, if you read what I said carefully, I said "we will re-visit it later." Meaning it will get fixed when we have an opening to do so, which would be the same quality then when we finish.
It is your game, so it is your decision. I am just curious to know what the difficulty is.
You actually said "maybe re-visit the arms later" which in my experience (somewhere down the line) turns into "eh, its good enough"
Obviously I have no idea what is going on within your dev team, or how important that screen is, so I could be completely wrong. I am simply making assumptions based on the rather vague information you have given.
I believe it is more difficult than you have suggested; however, to be safe, I have asked Luis if he can do it. When I say re-visit later, I do actually mean it. We are dedicated to quality above all else.
I am glad to hear it, if you don't mine I would like to know whether or not he does it.
I have worked with first person arms before, and to my knowledge the only thing that could cause problems would be if they are already rigged (though even then I believe there is a way, but it would not be so easy as simply flipping them anymore.)
Also, just for the record, I am not trying to be insulting or overly critical. I am just asking questions and voicing concerns.
I will be sure to let you know. Or rather, you will see them in game soon enough. As for tone, I know, and don't worry about it.
What if he is left handed? I do think games should implement that in somehow, being left or right handed by choice. Not saying I'm left handed, because I'm not. But I've only seen two games that there are left handed characters, Zelda and Resident Evil 5(?) when you play co-op.
He is right handed. It makes it simpler for development and most people are righties too.
Since this should be an ***-kickin highly advanced suit, what about a holographic display?
Holographic would be interesting, but that is would entail too much time to develop it properly, and we have to be smart about where we spend our time. This could be something we look into later though.
Swapping is raccomended, but if we have to wait for an answer then OK.
About the choice, btw I like the idea of adding a display.
As for realistic appearance, I agree that making it standing in 3d would be better, but that means more polygons...
Standing in 3D either means polys or it means some complicated GFX, both of which are not a good thing for our team. I will let you guys know what he says though!
Well, it could be a lamenent. That way you won't have to compromise in polys, but you may have to add some glossy-ness to it, or some animation when it appears. Like a swipe, kinda like the ODST's visors.
Lamenent? That doesn't make any sense...
I used the term because it seemed like the best term to use. Not sure if it is even correct. Let me explain...
When you laminate a piece of paper, you just stick a plastic on it right? Well, the screen could be a thin piece of plastic that can display a screen. Like an LCD screen? They have some that are near construction paper thin that are clear, but can display images. It could be like that.
Oh, I see what you mean. That was kind of the idea already.
