This is the story of the Norwegian explorer Johan Adrian Jacobsen. From 1881 to 1883 he travelled along the northwestern coasts of the Americas. Commissioned by a support comitee, he purchased and catalogued an immense number of artefacts and objects from local tribes for the German Humboldt Foundation. Totem's Sound is based on his personal accounts. Well, almost. Enjoy a day of Johan's journey, featuring great outdoor activities such as canoe races, collecting clams, not getting eaten by a giant grizzley and of course fish oil binge drinking. Get in contact with the local tribes, that are struggling to preserve their ways of life and their cultures in a rapidly changing world. Totem's Sound is an action rpg developed with the wonderful Löve. It's a commission by the Humbold Foundation, that Johan Adrian Jacobsen collected artefacts for 133 years ago. It was developed by the artist group gold extra in close collaboration with Causa Creations. And don't forget: it's a prototype.

A short introduction to Totem's Sound's sister project, an augmented reality installation.

Posted by on

As already mentioned in our first introduction, we happen to make this game, because we were commissioned to do so by a museum in the wonderful city known as Berlin. With some of us coming from a motion graphics background, we had the grand idea to also experiment with location-based media, respectively augmented reality.

Analogue to the game's five missions, this augmented reality project is a journey, based on five artefacts, however you have to be in the museum itself to experience it, and search for the little stories that are somewhere hidden in a hall filled with Haida artefacts. Esteemed reader, don't despair, if you can't make it there to experience this part of our "experiment", here's a short video introduction to the project...
