Cell Editor Prototype
Jan 13, 2010 Demo 23 commentsThis is the earliest version of our cell editor. Enjoy and comment!
Thrive's goal is to encapsulate the player in the wonders of the universe, and to allow them to manipulate the virtual world around them in any way they please. Our game will contain multiple editors where players can create and modify technology, culture, organisms, and entire solar systems.
When a player tires of creation, or wishes to test what they have made, they can move on to actually playing the game, and experience the evolutionary progression of a species from a eukaryotic single cell to a thriving civilization. At any point in the game, a player can play as a single organism and experience the world through their senses. Later, as organisms group together, the player can move into an RTS-style play where they command several units at once- from a few footsoldiers to fleets of starhips.
Along the way from cities to colonized planets and beyond, special tools will be discovered by your species. These "God Tools" allow for easy manipulation of entities within the game- merging together the editors and gameplay to allow the player to reshape their universe from within.
If you would like to be part of this incredible project , and can donate any amount of time at all, we are actively seeking the following:
- Graphic Artists
- 3D Artists
- Legal Advisors
- Software Developers (Games)
- Scientific Advisors
- Composer (Soundtracks)
- Sound Effects Engineer
- Promoters
- People with cool ideas and visions for the biggest game ever conceived!
If you are at all interested in contributing, please go to our Development Forums. REMEMBER that we are a FreeWare and OpenSource project, and that because of the revolutionary nature and monumental scale of the project, this game will not be completed for some time. We're all looking forward to having your help!

Our programmer untrustedlife has been working hard on a prototype that models the microbial ecosystem. At this point, it's basic, but beautiful to watch in action. From a few original microbes in a resource-rich environment grow dozens of strains and hundreds of individuals that compete over resources that are continuously being depleted as they try to maximize their own progeny.
All of this is occurring in a real-time fluid dynamics simulation where the environment is continuously turbulent and nutrients and cells are sent on diverging paths through the liquid environment.
We're very proud of this prototype, and believe it's an excellent way to investigate the ecology of microbe stage. We plan on implementing more varied bacteria, introducing genetic mutations, and making it easier to see which strains are different from others in the future.
Controls are simple- Once you've gained a flagella through endocytosis (soon to be changed to mutation), you can move your cell by clicking and holding LMB on the location you want to move to. However, the current is quite strong, and you'll have to plan your route carefully in order to get where you want. To speed up time, press F1, and to kill your own cell, press F3.
We hope you'll enjoy this and gain insight into the deeper-level environment simulation we plan to include in Thrive.
Once again, thank you for your support

We didn't have alphas out 3 years ago. We had a simple prototype. We have alphas out now, as well as prototypes that surpass that old one.
Wow, great to see some progress!
The link to your forums in the description doesn't work, but it does on your profile.
I realize, they've become three. Admitably, counting is a really difficult process, right? :x
